2024 IIHS Criteria Gets Even Stricter To Encourage Improved Rear Passenger And Pedestrian Safety

The Korean automaker is followed by Toyota, along with its luxury division Lexus, by securing 13 awards (one Top Safety Pick+ and 12 Top Safety Pick). Mazda has the most accolades of any single brand, with six awards (five Top Safety Pick+ and one Top Safety Pick).

Like last year, small sedans and pickup trucks, along with minivans, did not perform as well as crossovers/SUVs, with the midsize luxury SUV category earning the most awards overall with 17 (five Top Safety Pick+ and 12 Top Safety Pick).

“We followed the tougher requirements we introduced last year with another major update to the award criteria in 2024,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “This year’s winners are true standouts, offering the highest level of protection for both vehicle occupants and other vulnerable road users.”
