2024 Porsche Cayenne Debuts With Updated Looks And More Power

Porsche released its Q1 2023 sales figures today, and it’s clear that the Cayenne’s appeal is only growing. The German carmaker sold nearly 62 percent more units of its largest SUV this year than during the same period in 2022. And while the third-generation Cayenne remains popular, it was introduced in 2017 and is due for a refresh. The 2024 model debuts today and does just that, bringing an updated exterior and significant performance gains.

The refreshed SUV is now more powerful across the board, with the S models counting on V8 power again, replacing the V6 in the 2023 models. The range-topping Turbo GT also gets a bump, now developing 650 horsepower or just 7 hp shy of the Lamborghini Urus S. Inside, the Cayenne now offers an optional passenger display, a redesigned center console, and a new 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster. In base form, the new Cayenne starts at $80,850, including destination.

A Significant Refresh

Although it may be hard to tell because the 2024 Porsche Cayenne’s updates are evolutionary, this refreshed third-gen SUV sports a brand-new front end. This includes a redesigned front bumper, fenders, hood, and LED headlights. While these tweaks don’t completely change the Cayenne’s aesthetic, they give it a slightly sharper and more aggressive look.

Out back, the Cayenne’s LED taillights are more prominent than ever, with a more pronounced trim piece surrounding them. They feature a three-dimensional construction, replacing their predecessor’s flat lenses. Just below the updated lighting elements sits a redesigned rear bumper which now integrates the license plate beneath the rear hatch’s shut line for both the standard and coupe variants.

This latest refresh brings three new colors, Algarve Blue Metallic, Montego Blue Metallic, and Artic Grey. These combine with a new range of 20, 21, and 22-in wheels, expanding customization options for the model. The range-topping Turbo GT sees minimal updates as it still offers an aggressive front splitter, rear wing, trunk lid spoiler, and 22-in GT Design wheels as standard.

A More Powerful Engine Range

While none of the 2024 Porsche Cayenne’s engines are new, they are more powerful. See below for a complete engine and horsepower breakdown. Porsche has yet to unveil full performance figures for all Cayenne variants.

Model Engine Output 0-60 MPH
Cayenne / Coupe Turbocharged 3.0-Liter V6 348 Horsepower / 368 Foot-Pounds TBA
Cayenne E-Hybrid / Coupe Turbocharged 3.0-Liter V6 With Hybrid Assist 463 Horsepower / TBA Foot-Pounds TBA
Cayenne S / Coupe Twin-Turbocharged 4.0-Liter V8 468 Horsepower / 442 Foot-Pounds 4.4 Seconds
Cayenne Turbo GT Twin-Turbocharged 4.0-Liter V8 650 Horsepower / TBA Foot Pounds 3.1 Seconds

The big news is that the Cayenne S counts on V8 power again, leaving its turbocharged V6 behind. According to Porsche, it extensively reworked its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, delivering 468 hp and 442 lb-ft. While this output is nothing to scoff at, there’s a clear gap between the S and the Turbo GT for what likely will be the introduction of a GTS and Turbo variants at a later date.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid sees significant changes. It is now nearly as powerful as the pricier S. Its electric motor now develops 174 hp, which, combined with its turbo V6 delivers a total output of 463 hp. Thanks to a larger 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the E-Hybrid is expected to provide an extended electric-only driving range, although the carmaker has yet to announce official range figures.

The Cayenne, E-Hybrid, and S models come standard with an updated steel spring suspension system with Porsche Active Suspension Management. However, this latest refresh adds new two-valve shock absorbers, although an adaptive air suspension system is optional. According to Porsche, this updated standard setup should improve handling characteristics and comfort over the previous model.

The top Turbo GT model sees the fewest updates of the updated Cayenne range. It still comes standard with its adaptive air suspension, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, rear-axle steering, and Sport Exhaust. Like its predecessor, it is only available in the Coupe body style. However, power from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 increases to 650 hp, allowing it to reach 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and top out at 189 mph.

Welcome Back Switches

Inside is perhaps where the 2024 Porsche Cayenne changes most. It now features a 12.6-in fully digital instrument cluster like you’ll find in the Taycan, a 12.3-in central infotainment screen and an optional 10.9-in passenger display. This new passenger screen is there to display both performance figures and entertainment. According to Porsche, passengers can stream movies and videos on the additional display.

Taking inspiration again from the Taycan, the updated Cayenne removes the gear selector in its center console. Instead, it replaces it with a vertical switch selector embedded into the dashboard, just right of the steering wheel. This change frees up interior space and relocates a selector drivers don’t actively interact with. For manual gear selection, the Cayenne still sports wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Now that its gear selector is up and out of the way, more space is available in the Cayenne’s center console. To capitalize on it, the 2024 model sports larger climate controls with physical switches replacing its predecessor’s haptic feedback surface. A larger volume knob also appears just above a large storage bin. Porsche’s return to physical buttons and switches is welcomed, especially as customer satisfaction surveys point to buyers favoring these over their haptic feedback counterparts.

The rest of the Cayenne’s tech updates surround its safety systems, with the refreshed E3 now offering Active Speed Limit Assist as standard. While its Adaptive Cruise Control remains optional, it adds two new functions, Evasion Assist, which helps its driver during emergency maneuvers, and Turn Assist, which monitors oncoming traffic when making a left turn and can stop the vehicle to avoid an accident.
