2026 BMW i3 Sedan: What We Know About The Electrified 3 Series

  • The new electric i3 sedan will be sold alongside ICE versions of the 3 Series sedan and Touring.
  • Entry-level models are expected to start with 300 hp featuring an 800-volt system.
  • The i3 will compete with Tesla Model 3 and Audi A4 EV in the growing luxury electric car market.

BMW is accelerating toward the next phase of its electric future with the launch of the Neue Klasse platform. This dedicated electric architecture embodies the company’s strategic shift toward electric and digital mobility. Spearheading this effort will be the production versions of the Vision Neue Klasse sedan and X SUV concepts, set to adopt the i3 and iX3 names when they debut in 2026 and 2025, respectively.

We previously offered a glimpse of the iX3, slated for arrival next year as the US’s first fully electric X3. Now, let’s delve into what the i3 will bring to the table as the electric counterpart to the popular 3 Series sedan.

Building on a New Foundation

Despite sharing its name with the quirky i3 electric hatchback, the new i3 is a distinct model utilizing BMW’s recently unveiled Neue Klasse platform. It continues BMW’s dual-platform strategy, where EVs like the i3 and iX3 coexist alongside their gas-powered counterparts—the 3 Series and X3, akin to the current i5 and 5 Series, and i7 and 7 Series models.

The upcoming i3 will be part of a lineup that includes the iX3, iX4, and iX5 SUVs, marking a significant step in the automaker’s electrification strategy.

Simplified Surfaces

Previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse concept, the i3 boasts a striking aesthetic that resembles other Neue Klasse offerings while maintaining uniquely distinct design elements. The rapid succession of new models means the design language will look fresh from the first model (iX3) until the last of the next-generation cars is launched.

BMW’s design team has focused on simplified lines and striking surfaces, emphasizing the iconic kidney grille and C-pillar Hofmeister kink. The new i3 will sport a shark-nose fascia, 21-inch wheels reminiscent of BMW Motorsport’s history, a sleek dual-cowl hood, double LED headlights, and sharp lower vents.

Tech-laden Outlook

Moving inside, the i3’s cabin will feature the new BMW Panoramic Vision interface as standard (a new iDrive operating system). It offers a whole new approach to in-vehicle interaction, with customizable levels of augmented reality that display across the entire width of the windshield.

Other goodies include multifunction massaging seats and a futuristic wrap-around dashboard influenced by the i3’s conceptual forebearer. BMW’s augmented reality glasses, expected in 2027, will further enhance digital integration. The interior offers more space than the ICE 3-Series, blending advanced technology with luxury and comfort.

Powertrain and Batteries

The highly flexible Neue Klasse platform will accommodate both single and dual-motor setups, enabling rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. BMW will likely employ its familiar double-digit numbering system to signify power output, with potential models like i3 30, i3 40, and a high-performance i3 M50.

BMW’s recent partnership with Rimac Technology could bring additional efficiency gains beyond the company’s previously announced cylindrical battery design. This design promises up to a 30% increase in range, faster charging times, and significantly reduced production costs.

Entry-level models are expected to start with 300 horsepower and utilize an 800-volt system, enabling fast charging speeds of up to 270 kilowatts and bidirectional charging capabilities. This combination should ensure a competitive driving range exceeding 500 miles (over 800 kilometers).

Following the launch of the standard i3 and sportier i3 M Performance variant, BMW will unleash a true flagship under the iM3 badge. This electric beast could boast a staggering 1,341 horsepower, achieved through a quad-motor setup that capitalizes on the Neue Klasse platform’s impressive potential of up to 1,000 kW. Though not confirmed for the iM3 EV, such technology hints at robust torque vectoring and sophisticated wheel-specific controls.

Revealing Rivals

The i3’s reveal is tipped for 2026, arriving less than a year after the first Neue Klasse model, the iX3. The high-performance iM3 is projected to follow in 2027.

Primary competitors include the Audi A4 EV, Tesla Model 3, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV, setting the stage for a brutal battle in the luxury electric vehicle market. However, more affordable options like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Mazda’s upcoming EV sedan will also try to poach a slice of the pie.
