We often talk about the build quality of vehicles and how it saves drivers and occupants from major accidents. However, what we often forget is the role played by features like airbags, ABS, and others. We tend to focus only on how the body or shell of the car absorbs the impact and protects the passengers. Here, we have one such instance reported by a Hyundai i20 customer, where he escaped from a serious accident solely because he was wearing a seatbelt.
The owner of the Hyundai i20 N Line shared his experience on Team-BHP. He, along with his friends, had gone out for a weekend breakfast drive in July 2022. The accident happened while he was returning home from the early morning drive. He mentions that the i20 N Line he was driving was only 6 months old.
While returning, he had one friend in a car in front of him and another behind him. He was driving between these two vehicles. The car in front was overtaking a slow-moving car in the right lane from the left lane. All of a sudden, the car in front of him lifted off the accelerator.
The i20 N Line driver did not realize that the car ahead was slowing down, as the driver did not apply brakes and there were no indications. By the time he realized what was happening, it was too late.
His friend changed lanes because there was a tractor and trailer in front of the car. However, since the i20 driver was tailgating the car in front, he didn’t have enough time or space to avoid the tractor and trailer.
The driver applied the brakes, and the car started swerving left and right, as he described. He did apply the brakes, and in a bid to avoid the crash, he turned the steering away from the trailer, but eventually, the car crashed into it. It seems the hatchback was being driven at high speed because the driver recalls the rear of the car going airborne after the impact.
Thankfully, he was wearing a seatbelt, which ensured that he stayed in his seat. The airbags deployed on time. From the images the owner shared, it is clear that the front of the hatchback was completely damaged. The roof, pillars, bonnet, and fenders absorbed the impact, with most of the damage on the left side of the car.
This is another reason why the driver escaped without any injuries: the seatbelt kept him in place, and the airbags ensured that his head and face were safe. He walked out of the car almost immediately after the crash and noticed that the right-side tire had burst, along with other damages. The only reason the driver was saved in this case was the safety features like airbags and seatbelts.
In fact, the seatbelt played a more crucial role. If the driver had not been wearing one, he could have been thrown out of the car upon impact, which could have led to more serious injuries.
