If you read between the lines of Tesla’s latest Vehicle Safety Report (VSR), it claims its cars are ten times safer than average vehicles.
Tesla released a new VSR containing data about the company’s Autopilot driver assist system and its ability to reduce crashes. “We are proud of Autopilot’s performance and its impact on reducing traffic collisions. The benefit and promise of Autopilot is clear from the Vehicle Safety Report data that we have been sharing for four years,” the automaker said.
As of the third quarter of 2022, Tesla vehicles with Autopilot engaged were involved in a crash once every 6.26 million miles (up from once every 5.54 million miles in 2021). Without Autopilot, Tesla drivers crashed once every 1.71 million miles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the average car crash takes place every 652,000 miles, meaning Autopilot is approximately ten times safer than an average vehicle.
