The Century is Toyota’s flagship sedan and it starts at an eye-watering ¥20,080,000 ($151,412) in Japan. While the limo is undeniably cool, many consumers want crossovers instead of sedans.  Toyota has reportedly heard that message loud and clear as a Century SUV is reportedly in the works.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the rumor, but it’s becoming more believable as Nikkei is reporting the model could be unveiled as early as this August.  It goes on to say that the Century SUV could be based on the Highlander that’s sold in North America and feature a hybrid powertrain.  This suggests it could get Toyota’s new Hybrid Max Powertrain that’s also found in the Crown pairing front and rear electric motors with a four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine producing at least 340 horses.

The report goes on to say the luxury SUV will be built at the company’s Tahara plant, which traditionally builds Lexus vehicles.  The publication added the model will be positioned above the Land Cruiser and is “expected to be in at least the mid-10 million yen range.”  15,000,000 yen is the equivalent of $113,085 and the model will reportedly be aimed at “wealthy people overseas” as well as government officials.

In other news, the publication says Lexus will likely offer the LM minivan in Japan.  The model was introduced in China four years ago and is reportedly so popular there that used LMs are selling for more than new.

As a refresher, the LM starts at ¥1.166 million ($171,599) and features seating for seven.  Lexus also offers a ¥1.466 million ($215,750) Royal Edition that has two executive rear seats with ottomans as well as heating, ventilation, and massage functions.  Rear seat passengers will also find a massive 26-inch display as well as a refrigerator and a host of other amenities.
