Honda is getting ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary this fall and it appears they could have more than cake and ice cream.

Speaking with Autocar, Honda Motor Europe Senior Vice President Tom Gardner said “watch this space” as the company is turning 75 and “we had the S2000 at 50.” He then threw out a disclaimer of “who knows,” but that’s more than enough to reinvigorate the rumor mill.

However, Honda doesn’t exactly have the best track record with sports cars not named Civic, as the second-generation NSX was killed, reborn, and then met with a shrug after an initial wave of enthusiasm. NSX production wrapped up in November, although Acura has previously said they’ll “continue to pursue sports cars in the electrified era.”

Speaking of which, Acura Vice President Jon Ikeda remarked “Acura is a performance brand, a company of enthusiasts, and we will continue moving forward, actively investigating what the next generation of sports cars should be in an electrified era.”

Of course, that’s the NSX and Gardner hinted at the possibility of an S2000 revival. That particular rumor mill has been running on fumes of late, but a few years ago there were vague suggestions the S2000 could return in 2024 with similar proportions to the original as well as a tweaked version of the Civic Type R’s powertrain. More recently, the company teased two electric sports cars and one could be the an S2000 successor.

So what does Honda have in store for their 75th anniversary? A new NSX? A new S2000? A totally different sports offering or perhaps nothing at all? Only time will tell, but you might want to take everything with a grain of salt.
