The Mahindra Thar has always been a popular SUV among customers who enjoy off-roading. It is frequently seen among these groups. With the launch of the new generation Thar, the SUV has become even more capable and popular among such enthusiasts. We have come across several videos in the past where people have driven the Mahindra Thar through extreme conditions. Most people are attracted to this SUV for its looks and capabilities, with only a few considering fuel efficiency as a factor. In this video, we have a customer who was concerned about fuel economy and ended up installing an aftermarket CNG kit into his Thar.

The video has been uploaded by TakuliAutoTalks on their YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger interviews the shop owner who installed the CNG kit in the vehicle. The video discusses the performance and challenges the workshop faced during the installation process. It is worth noting that it is uncommon to see a Mahindra Thar with a CNG cylinder in the boot. The vlogger opens the bonnet of the Mahindra Thar and showcases the engine bay.

In the video, we can see the reducer, high-pressure gas pipes, injectors, and ECU. The wires and hoses are neatly arranged. Since this is a turbocharged petrol engine, the workshop had to put in extensive effort to make the CNG kit compatible with it. However, the exact details of this process are not clearly presented in the video. The vlogger moves away from the car and points out the mStallion badging on the front fender, indicating that it is a petrol Thar. The video then shows the boot, where a 12 kg CNG cylinder is neatly placed, leaving no space for luggage.

The gas refilling nozzle is conveniently located next to the petrol filler cap. In the diesel version, this space is used for the DPF fluid nozzle. Since this is a petrol Thar and does not require a DPF, the space was repurposed for the CNG filling purpose. After showcasing the car from the outside, the vlogger asks the workshop owner to take the car for a drive. The SUV is parked on an uneven ground, and the workshop employee is instructed to engage 4×4 and test the SUV’s performance in this mild off-road section.

The driver follows the instructions, and the automatic petrol Thar performs well after engaging 4H. The vlogger expresses surprise at the performance. After driving the Thar on the ground for some time, the driver takes the SUV onto a road and disengages 4H. The vlogger remarks that there is absolutely no lag, and the vehicle effortlessly maintains its performance. The video even shows the Thar reaching speeds of 120 kmph in CNG mode. The modifications made to this SUV are very neatly executed. If you are planning to retrofit a CNG kit into your car, we recommend going to an experienced vendor who sells RTO-approved CNG kits. Alternatively, you can consider purchasing a vehicle that comes with a factory-fitted CNG kit.
