America's New VW Tiguan Won't Be Like Everyone Else's

We’ve known for some time that Volkswagen is preparing to replace the current Tiguan. But it seems the Tiguan lineup will be different in the US, as, while it will be called the Tiguan, it will actually be based on the second-gen Volkswagen Tayron. If that name sounds familiar, the Tayron was initially offered in China only as a compact SUV.

Speaking to Autocar, Karl-Heinz Hell, VW’s head of engineering for mid- to full-size models, said: “We will extend our existing SUV line-up on a global basis with the second-generation Tayron, which is already under development and will go on sale by the middle of the decade.”

The next-gen Tayron will be underpinned by the MQB platform, which it will share with an all-new Tiguan that VW has begun teasing, and will reportedly spawn two body styles. Previously, the Tayron had a coupe version called the Tayron X, so we may get both a standard SUV and a coupe variant. However, they will still be sold under the Tiguan name in the US.
