The video’s presenter first turns the crank to see if there could be damage in the assembly. Unlike most of his teardown projects, the S55 rotated just fine. He also pulled out the spark plugs, which showed their age but didn’t throw up any red flags.

The F80 was the first BMW M3 generation to utilize forced induction, but the turbos had already been stripped from the motor prior to this teardown. So, without turbos to take apart and inspect, removing the intake and exhaust manifolds is the next step, revealing no major issues. Likewise, there wasn’t much damage revealed when the cam cover came off, with minor wear being so minimal that the camshafts could still be sold on and used for another build.
