The reveal of the “Mk8.5” will coincide with the nameplate’s 50th anniversary. It was in 1974 when VW introduced the successor to the Beetle with the Golf. The hatchback was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same guy who penned cars like the BMW M1 and DMC DeLorean. The model instantly appealed to car buyers, selling a million units just two years after its debut.
More than 37 million Golfs have been delivered today, making it the best-selling VW of all time. Volkswagen Classic will honor the nameplate by showcasing the Golf generations I to VII at the Salon Retromobile show in Paris from January 31 to February 4, 2023. The automaker will also attend the Bremen Classic Motorshow from February 2 to 4 next year with a Golf I and the 1969 Golf-based EA 276 concept car.
As for the upcoming facelifted version, VW said the pre-sale period will begin in spring 2024.
