What’s the difference between the Turbo S Cab and the regular Turbo?

About 0.1 seconds. 992 Turbos S Cabriolet can go 0-60 in 2.7 seconds and the 992 Turbo can go 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. That 0.1 second adds a pretty penny to the cost of the car.

Let’s turn our attention back to those impressive engine statistics. Porsche goes against the grain by making a boxer-6 4.0L naturally aspirated engine, which means it doesn’t use turbochargers or superchargers.

  • Turbo S engine twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-6 engine, which is paired to an electronically controlled transmission,  revs up the car quicker and faster and propels it forward as few other cars can.
  • 992 Turbo S top speed is 205 mph. Porsche’s achievement here is notable, with 590 pounds of torque and 3,745 ccs of motor displacement.
  • That adds up to an impressive 168.4 horsepower per liter, with a power-to-weight ratio of 5.7 pounds per horsepower.

In case you thought Porsche went for broke on the mechanical specs of this model, think again. Known for their detailed interiors, Porsche did not slack with the 992 Turbo S interior.

It is important to note here that the 992 is not designed as a passenger car. Or at the very least, your passengers won’t have the same amenities they might have in a traditional sedan or even other competitive models of high-end sports cars. That’s because the 992 is built for performance, not commuting: In order to make the car more aerodynamic, Porsche got rid of the front cargo area. The Clubsport package comes with a fire extinguisher and, in many markets, a roll-cage. A suburban vehicle, this is not. Then again, who would want to cart around the kids and Fido in a machine like this?

What the 992 lacks in practicality/cargo space, it makes up for in fine detail. The seats are lightweight and made of durable, comfortable microfiber. The steering wheel is adjustable in a myriad of ways—from suspension to differential, providing a range of customization usually only available in a race car. There are traction control settings offering seven different positions (and also the ability to kill the feature completely by turning it off).

There are, however, some customizations you can make to the interior to make it more of your style. Porsche offers the Turbo in their Classic, Pure, and Exclusive Manufacturer Leather trims, as well as a lightweight package. Want to lose weight even more? The lightweight package allows you to delete the rear seating and opt for full-bucket seating in the front.

We’ve already told you about the 992 911 Turbo S brakes, but let’s look at them in more detail. The PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes) have a front setup of 10-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 420 mm cross-drilled (and internally vented) brake discs, and a rear setup of 4-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers with 390 mm cross-drilled (and internally vented brake discs). The model features standard yellow brake calipers. These high-end choices will keep the vehicle safe and controllable, even at top speeds.

Active air intake flaps

All that speed comes with serious heat. The active air intake flaps help to cool the brakes naturally, prolonging the life of these crucial components and protecting the car. When the flaps are closed, air travels around the bumper and reduces drag (while increasing efficiency). The car’s central computer system will keep these flaps closed as much as possible at speeds about around 43 mph. The vents will open, though, at speeds about 93 mph – this is to help keep the car cool and provide stability at high speeds.

But there are a few more luxury tricks up Porsche’s sleeve. The 992 comes standard with a BOSE surround system. If even audio-giant BOSE speakers aren’t up to snuff for you, you have the option to add an 855-watt Burmester audio system for $5,000. The 992 also has an optional Sport Exhaust System, a Sport Chrono Package, and the option to add a lightweight carbon fiber roof for an extra $3,890.

Porsche has a long legacy of performing at the absolute highest level of automaking. We’re always excited when they bring something new onto the market, and it’s exciting to think that the 992 911 Turbo can actually be in the consumer market for regular (but wealthy) folks. Fast cars (even when they’re made in Germany) are part of the American dream—freedom, speed, power, and control. Cars represent a whole lot more than transportation to an American auto-enthusiast audience, and we’re grateful to Porsche for always giving us something new to daydream about.
