Key Takeaways

  • Mercedes-AMG GT 55 starts at almost $135,000; GT 63 starts at just under $176,000.
  • More affordable six-cylinder versions expected in the coming months.
  • Carbon Fiber Package, AMG Aerodynamics Package, and AMG Performance seats among several available options.

Mercedes-Benz has announced US pricing and specifications for the long-awaited AMG GT Coupe, the second generation of the Three-pointed Star’s Porsche 911 chaser. While a base Neuenelfer is cheaper, an entry-level Maserati GranTurismo is considerably more, putting the new GT in something of a sweet spot.

At launch, two variants sharing the same engine will be offered, the GT 55 and the GT 63. Unlike the rest of the Mercedes range, there aren’t any trim levels to choose from, with both variants receiving comprehensive standard equipment. Both vehicles are priced well into the six-figure range, with options that push the price tag further into the stratosphere.

The lineup starts with the $134,900 GT 55, which gains motivation from a 469-horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. If those numbers didn’t manage to bowl you over, the GT 63 ups power to 577 horses, but this comes at a higher price: $175,900, to be exact. Interestingly, the new Aston Martin Vantage uses the same motor, but packs an even bigger punch, with 656 horses.

There’s no denying that’s a lot of money, but several performance-enhancing and luxury features are included in the MSRP.

Plenty Of Standard Kit To Justify The Eye-Watering Price Tag

It’s worth noting that more affordable variants with six-cylinder power are planned to launch in the coming months.

On the performance front, both GT Coupes receive the AMG Dynamic Select “Race” Drive Program (which includes a drift mode), AMG Active Ride Control Suspension, an active rear spoiler, AMG Track Pace, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, rear-axle steering.

The new GT is a better sports car, a technological tour-de-force, and a better 911 rival than ever.

That should make it fun to drive, but this is still a Mercedes, so it should be able to envelop you in luxury once you’re done exploiting the V8. Buyers won’t be disappointed: a Burmester surround sound system, a heated, Nappa leather-trimmed AMG Performance steering wheel, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are all included.

A head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, blind-spot assistance, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity also form part of the standard equipment. If that’s not enough, Mercedes-Benz is offering AMG GT Coupe clients plenty of options and packages.

Plenty Of Scope For Personalization

Starting with the exterior, there are 11 paint choices, six of which are special Manufaktur finishes. While 11 is plenty, we wish Mercedes would take a page from Maserati’s book (the GranCabrio has 31 available hues, albeit at a much higher MSRP) and expand its color palette. There are several wheel designs, sized between 20 and 21 inches.

A Carbon Fiber Package is available for the front splitter, side mirror caps, and the rear diffuser, to name a few places. An AMG Aerodynamics Package includes a fixed rear wing, larger rear diffuser, and flics on the air intakes, wheel arches, and rear apron. These revisions reduce front-axle lift while simultaneously increasing rear downforce.

AMG Performance seats are also up for grabs. A total of nine upholstery finishes – seven Nappa leather, two Nappa leather/microfiber – are available, along with several trim inlay designs. Those seeking more practicality can spring for the 2+2 seating layout. When not in use, the rear seats fold away, availing 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

All pricing mentioned above excludes Mercedes’ $1,150 destination fee.
