Mercedes-AMG has detailed the arrival of a new variant of the AMG GT Coupe sports car in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance. The plug-in hybrid range-topper for the AMG GT Coupe lineup will be unveiled on April 20 at an AMG Brand Night Event in Shanghai, China, on the same weekend as the Chinese Formula 1 Grand Prix, prior to being displayed at Auto China 2024 from April 25.
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupe is the latest in a line of plug-in hybrid AMG models that currently includes versions of the AMG C63 Sedan, GLC 63 SUV and Coupe, E53, S63, AMG GT 63 4-Door, and the most recent addition, the SL 63 S E Performance, which was revealed in December. The latter gives us the most insight into what to expect from the newcomer, as the two share platforms, engines, and almost everything else, aside from the convertible roof that won’t be present on the AMG GT.
The AMG SL 63 S E Performance pairs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a plug-in hybrid system with a 6.1 kWh battery generating total outputs of 805 horsepower and 1,047 lb-ft of torque sent to an all-wheel drive system, which is expected to carry over verbatim to the closed-roof variant. In the SL, these yield a 2.8-second dash to 60 mph and a top speed of 196 mph, with eight miles of pure electric driving. Considering the standard AMG GT 63 Coupe already weighs more than a Bugatti Veyron, the addition of the hybrid systems will likely see its curb weight balloon further.
We were previously given a glimpse of a camouflaged version of the AMG GT 63 S E Performance at IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, confirmed to have more than 800 hp. Now, the wraps are ready to come off.
