After a brief stint in the ’60s as a special model from the original Mustang series, the first of the modern Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 generations was revived as a 2007 model as part of the fifth-generation S-197 Mustang. It came with a supercharged 5.4L V8 and a six-speed stick shift. It served as a successor to the early-2000s SVT Cobra. It was fiendishly quick, but nose-heavy due to the iron-block engine, but this problem was fixed in 2010 with a far lighter aluminum engine. The car received a huge 112-hp power hike in 2012 and the last one was made the next year. A six-year hiatus followed before the GT500 was reincarnated as a new-generation S550, now with 760 hp and an all-new body and powertrain. This Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 sold for three model years only.

After a six-year dry spell, and for the 2020-2022 models years only, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s redesign – the new S550 – was on sale. It finally dropped the supercharged Modular V8 in exchange for the new supercharged Predator 5.2L V8, tuned to 760 hp, and now available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission only.

For the 2010 model year, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 received changes like the rest of the Mustang lineup, including styling updates and improved suspension, while the supercharged 5.4L V8 was tweaked to 540 hp. The nose-heavy handling was fixed for MY2011 with the introduction of a new aluminum-block 5.4L V8 that weighed over 100 pounds less than the old iron engine and developed even more power – 550 hp. For 2013, the GT500 received a massive power hike to 662 hp.

For the 2007-2014 model years, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was on sale as a hardcore Mustang derivative with an iron-block 5.4L supercharged version of the Ford Modular V8 with four valves per cylinder, developing 500 hp and driving the rear wheels through a six-speed Tremec manual transmission. For MY2008, the GT500KR debuted with a 540-hp version of the engine.
