This Is The Most Hardcore Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Yet

Key Takeaways

  • The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec comes with software tuning and aerodynamic upgrades for this year’s Pikes Peak challenge.
  • The time-attack special joins production-spec Ioniq 5 N entries for a four-pronged effort.
  • The 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be an exciting event for EVs.

Hyundai N has revealed the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec, the most hardcore Ioniq 5 N yet. The pair of wild-looking time-attack specials aim to set the record for the Electric Modified SUV/Crossover category at the 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, joining two production-spec Ioniq 5 N entries for an all-electric four-pronged effort.

The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec runs on the same power unit as the tamer ones sold at showrooms but gets an increased power output through software tuning. With an increase of 37 horsepower at the rear axle, the TA Spec produces up to 678 hp, but obviously, the modifications don’t stop there.

Dressed To Kill

Dressed much wilder than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 NPX1 Concept, the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec is equipped with an aerodynamic package (a.k.a. massive wing, side skirts, diffuser, and splitters) designed to provide as much downforce as needed to stay on the ground while tackling Pikes Peak’s 156 turns. Hyundai didn’t provide details on how heavy it would go, though.

Other modifications include new shock absorbers, motorsport-spec brakes, and 18-inch Yokohama Advan 005 slick tires. Drivers will be kept safe with a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, Sabelt six-point Hans safety harness, a Pikes Peak International Hill Climb-spec roll cage, and an EV fire suppression system.

Exciting Event For EVs

The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec and the production-spec Ioniq 5 N will wear a special livery as they tackle the 12.42-mile course while producing sound from Hyundai’s N Active Sound+ with modified speakers (over 120 dB). The TA Spec models will be driven by Robin Shute, a four-time overall winner at Pikes Peak and current ‘King of the Mountain’ titleholder, and Dani Sordo, a Spanish World Rally Championship driver for Hyundai Motorsport. Meanwhile, the production models have Paul Dallenbach, 11-time PPIHC winner and three-time ‘King of the Mountain,’ and Ron Zaras, a Pikes Peak rookie and automotive media personality, at the helm.

The 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will take place on June 23. Ford has also given us a first look at its electric Pikes Peak contender, the equally hardcore F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.
