You may have seen some cars on the road with a unique number plate that reads BH and some numbers. Most of us know that these plates are called BH (Bharat) series registration, and it is a relatively new initiative. It has been created to make life easier for those who frequently relocate due to their jobs. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this system promises convenience as well as significant savings. So, if you are interested in knowing the details of the BH registration number, then you have come to the right place.
What is BH Series Registration?
The BH series registration was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in 2021. Its primary aim was to address the challenges faced by individuals who need to move from one state to another frequently.
Traditionally, moving a vehicle across states involved the cumbersome process of obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC), then paying road taxes again, and re-registering the vehicle in the new state.
Now the BH series eliminates these hassles by providing a pan-India registration number, valid across all states and union territories.

Vehicles with a BH series registration can be identified by their unique format. These include the year of registration, the BH code, and an alphanumeric series. It also gets a combination of letters and numbers (e.g., 21 BH XXXX XX). This registration is available for both private and commercial vehicles, provided the vehicle owner is eligible.
Eligibility Criteria for BH Series Registration
The BH series registration is currently available to employees of central and state governments, defense personnel, and public sector undertakings. Additionally, employees of private sector companies and organizations with offices in at least four states or union territories can also opt for this registration.
To apply for BH series registration, eligible vehicle owners need to submit an application through the Vahan portal, along with the necessary documents. The list of these documents includes proof of employment and address.
Financial Benefits of BH Series Registration
If you are one of those individuals who are eligible for BH series registration, you can potentially save a significant amount on road taxes. First off, under the BH series, road tax is levied for two years or in multiples of two.
Unlike the conventional system where a one-time tax is paid for 15 years, the BH series offers flexibility by allowing payment for shorter durations. The tax rates for BH series vehicles are calculated based on the vehicle’s invoice price.
Vehicles that cost up to Rs 10 lakh have a road tax of 8% levied. Then vehicles costing between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh get a road tax of 10%. Following this, vehicles costing above Rs 20 lakh are levied 12% road tax. An additional 2% is charged for diesel vehicles, while electric vehicles receive a 2% discount.
Savings Over Time
For individuals who relocate frequently, the BH series registration can lead to substantial savings. Consider a scenario where you own a vehicle worth Rs 15 lakh. Under the traditional system, you would pay a one-time road tax of Rs 1.5 lakh (assuming a 10% tax rate) for 15 years.
If you move to a new state within this period, you would need to pay the road tax again and go through the re-registration process. However, with the BH series, you can pay the road tax in installments.
For instance, if you pay the road tax for two years (Rs 30,000 per installment), you retain the flexibility to move without additional tax burdens. Over a span of 15 years, if you move states multiple times, the BH series could save you thousands of rupees in road tax and re-registration fees.
Convenience and Flexibility
Beyond financial savings, the BH series registration offers a lot of convenience. The elimination of the NOC and re-registration process saves time and effort, reducing bureaucratic red tape. This is especially beneficial for individuals in transferable jobs, such as military personnel and corporate employees.
Additionally, the BH series promotes ease of buying and selling vehicles. Since the registration is valid across India, buyers and sellers can transact without worrying about regional restrictions and additional paperwork.
