Old man builds EV

Electric vehicles are said to be the future of mobility. Most car manufacturers around the world has started adapting themselves to this shift and are investing development of EVs. Even in India, things are not different, we have Tata, MG, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, who either already have or are currently working on EVs. Other than these manufacturers, we have also seen several start-ups and individuals who convert their ICE vehicle to EV. Here we have one such man from Kerala who built an electric car for his daily drive.

The video has been shared by Village Vartha on their YouTube channel. In this video, we see Antony John, a 67-year-old man from Kerala’s Kollam district. Why do we have this man in the video? Well, he built an electric car for himself. Antony John is a career consultant by profession and he has an office of his own set up around 30 km away from home.

He earlier used to travel in an electric scooter to travel but as he got old, he started looking for a comfortable option. He did consider an electric car but, he couldn’t find anything that fits in his budget back in 2018. It was then that this thought of creating an EV of his own came to the mind. He did his research about the components and electrical parts he would need for the project.

He then contacted a nearby garage that used to build body for buses in his area. Antony provided them with a design he discovered online, and the garage constructed the body to his specifications. The final product was a small car that could fit two people in it. It is in fact a 4-seater but, only kids could sit there comfortably.

While he asked the workshop to get the body work done, he himself worked on the electricals and completed it. Antony did his research and  sourced the batteries, motor, and wiring from a vendor in Delhi. He started the work back in 2018 but few years after the work started, pandemic hit and he had to stop working.

Antony as we know was not a professional at building cars or in electricals. He did make mistakes and that delayed the work. Initially, he miscalculated the battery power, resulting in inadequate driving range.

However, at the end he did manage to get it right. Once the pandemic was over and lockdowns were lifted, he reconnected with the vendor, who recommended a higher-capacity battery for the car. Antony invested approximately 4.5 lakh rupees in this project and is presently developing another electric vehicle.

After installing the new battery, the electric car offered a maximum driving range of 60 km. Antony is extrmely proud of his creation and he uses it every day to commute to his office and back. His home-made electric car is so economical that it costs him only about Rs 5 to travel Rs 60 km everyday.

This small EV made by Antony is actually a low-powered EV with a maximum speed of less than 25 kmph. n India, electric vehicles with low power and battery pack do not require registration plates, but the driver must possess a valid driving license.
