The Indian industrialist and Tata bossman, Ratan Tata, is known for his leadership skills and business success. He is also known for his love for cars and owns an impressively expensive garage. However, we have also seen him own a bunch of humble cars over the years. In fact, he has had cars so humble in his garage, that we would have a hard time believing for someone of his league to have. Can you imagine a super rich and famous person driving around in a Nano EV? Well, here are three such vehicles he’s been spotted in, that go loud about his modesty and true automotive passion, unbound by price tags.

1. Tata Nexon: Safety First

This might surprise you, but Ratan Tata owns a Nexon! To be more precise, he uses the diesel iteration of the pre-facelift (Gen 1) Nexon wearing Blue paint. It gets a 1.5L turbo diesel engine generating 108 Bhp and 260 Nm and offers good fuel efficiency. Tata has retained this engine even on the latest model on sale here.

The Nexon is also known for its top-notch safety as the SUV had scored a 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. This could be one of the reasons that made the bossman choose one as his ride.

In 2024, Nexon is the best-selling Tata car and is also the vehicle with the most number of variants on offer. It now gets a wide range of powertrains- petrol, diesel, CNG and two forms of electric- Regular and extended range. After the launch of Curvv.EV, the Nexon.EV got a battery update as well.

2. Honda Civic: Personal Favourite

The Civic was an iconic car of its time. During its day, it managed to carve a niche for itself. The affluent- celebs and businessmen used to own this beautiful machine. They appreciated its sleek design, the tech onboard, the spacious cabin, reliability and the sweet powertrain. Ratan Tata was also a proud owner of the Civic. He was often spotted driving around in his White sedan, and is believed to have used it as his daily.

It is interesting to note that the Tata bossman had huge respect for the Civic. At the time when his pictures with the Honda went online, he faced trolls on social media for the same. These, however, deter the Tata chairman from using it further and making more public appearances with it. The Civic was offered with a single engine choice- 1.8L V-TEC churning out 130 Bhp and 172 Nm.

3. Custom-Built Nano EV

Ratan Tata's Nano EV

Electra EV, a company specialising in designing and building electric vehicle powertrains, once gifted an all-electric Tata Nano to Ratan.  The intention was to gather his feedback on the vehicle. The company electrified a regular Nano, converting it to an EV. The original Nano was powered by a 624 cc, 2-cylinder, petrol engine, mounted at the rear. It was thus a rear engine rear wheel drive vehicle.

Electra EV pulled out the ICE powertrain from a regular Nano and installed a 72V electric architecture in it. It is claimed to deliver 160 km in range. The company claims this electric Nano to do the 0 to 60 kmph sprint in under 10 seconds. Ratan Tata was later spotted driving this vehicle in Mumbai, several times. The official website says that Jayem NEO was a pilot project for Electra EV.

As per reports, Ratan’s garage also has a petrol-powered Nano. The industrialist still uses it occasionally.
