Pictures and short-form videos of a stranded Datsun Redigo have late been circulating on social media, which show the car on a small patch of tarmac, and the earth on all four sides of it removed. This has had the car ‘islanded’! People soon grew curious as to how its owner would get the Redigo out of the mess. It seems like the story has a different shade to it, which we will discuss in detail…
The Incident
It was recently that images and a few Instagram reels of this car surfaced. A Datsun Redigo, finished in Bronze Grey colour, was seen parked on a small strip of road. The earth on all four sides of it was removed, creating sizeable depths. This created an island, It is clear from the visuals that the car could not be moved, as trying to do so would cause it to fall into these depths, and get damaged. People wondered how the owner would take his car home. Trolls and sarcastic comments flowed in as well. Many wanted to know what was going on…
The Real Story Behind The Pictures:
The incident is from Kollam district in Kerala. The South Indian state is currently witnessing rapid expansion of roadways. National highways are now being rebuilt and expanded in size. Land acquisition for this is already underway. This Redigo was stranded as part of the same.
The car is parked near Chathannoor police station, in Kollam. It was involved in an offence previously and was reportedly seized. During the land acquisition, the cops were asked to move the Redigo from there, which they failed to do, as many of its components including the wheels were damaged. The construction people thus moved the earth around, leaving the car untouched. This made it look like being on a hilltop, with no way out. This strange incident soon got attention.
Cops say that the highway construction officials have agreed to devise a way to move the car to a dumping station used by the state police, which is not very far from there. Most likely, it will be lifted and moved with the help of a crane or similar machines.
It definitely feels good to hear that no inconvenience or asset loss was actually caused in this bizarre incident. If it were a passenger car owned and used by an individual that had to have this fate, things would have been different, and the highway construction company and its people would have faced severe criticism.
National Highway Construction In Kerala
The south Indian state currently has a total of 21 ongoing NH construction projects spanning over 747 kilometres. These highways are expected to improve connectivity and smooth out logistics between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This is expected to bring down transportation costs in the future. These roadways will also improve access to tourist destinations like Munnar.
The 3 upcoming Greenfield NH projects are- the four-laning of Palakkad to Calicut section of NH 966, building four-lane highways from Kochi to KL/TN border of NH-85, and a 4-Lane Trivandrum – Kottarakkara – Kottayam – Angamali highway(MC Road). In addition to these, flyovers and ROBs are also being built at various locations. The incident discussed here seems to have happened at the 4-lane MC road construction site.
The ongoing national highway construction has been causing inconvenience and severe traffic struggles at many locations. Several recent reports have cited people and vehicles getting stuck and having to wait for hours due to the ongoing road works.
