The AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Is the Most Powerful Mercedes On Sale

Engine

Twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with hybrid

Power

831 hp

Torque

1,032 lb-ft

There can only be one winner here, and that is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance four-door. It’s the most commanding of the AMG-GT family, as it combines the trusty 630 hp biturbo 4.0-liter V8 found in the standard model, albeit boosted slightly, with a potent electric powertrain, which is located at the rear. When both are factored in, power is boosted to a stiff 831 hp, while torque rises to a tire-bursting 1,032 lb-ft.

This makes it easily the most powerful road model Mercedes offers. The shiny grunt figures aren’t just for show either, as it also gets Merc’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system to ensure the AMG GT 63 has enough traction to make use of the power at its disposal. This allows it to sprint to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, which means its driver can embarrass most cars they come across on the road.

This electrifying pace is assisted by a rapid-fire nine-speed automatic gearbox, which also means it can be used for an elegant cruise when you want to forget about nailing every shift.

AMG GT 63 SE Performance Doesn’t Just Take Care Of The Straights

Being careful not to simply offer up a factory drag racer, Merc’s AMG department also ensured that the car could tackle the bends as effectively as it gets to them. An AMG Performance ride control system is included, which can adjust the dampers and shocks to suit any situation.

The car is stiffened up when sportier modes are selected to ensure it’s agile and fun to drive, but can be softened for when the time comes to cruise home in a sea of leather and peace. Alongside the advanced suspension setup, the Performance also comes with a set of carbon-ceramic disc brakes. These not only ensure its driver has maximum braking performance when they hit the pedal, but that they won’t fade over continuous use.

BMW And Mercedes Are Not Having A Good Time

Both German automakers are facing something of a slump.

Performance Upgrades Don’t Compromise The Luxury Aspects Of The Car

While the AMG GT 63 S E Performance can hold its own when being pushed to the edge of grip, this doesn’t mean it can’t be a grown-up luxury cruiser when it wants to. The dynamic suspension takes care of the ride, and the handy AWD system ensures it provides confidence to its driver whatever the weather.

The cockpit is where the magic happens though, and Mercedes makes sure each customer is well taken of in this regard. A wide selection of colors for the leather seats can be chosen, while the trim can be specified depending on what each driver wants from their performance car. A carbon-effect trim makes the interior feel more purposeful, though it can also be specced with Grey Birch and Brown Ash wood effects for those looking for more of a traditional luxury feel.

It comes with the usual refinements you’d expect for a car of this stature, with automatic climate control and electrically folding wing mirrors. It also comes with an ultra-modern 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes with the usual Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. This includes a navigation system, as well as a rear camera to help with parking in those tight spots.

A 360-degree camera can be added to the equation at extra cost via the Premium Plus package, which also includes climatized seats and a range-topping Burmester audio setup. A heated steering wheel and a panoramic roof can also be added should its buyer feel flush enough to choose the Energizing package when speccing their vehicle.

For those who want to treat their rear passengers, there is also the Executive Rear Seat Package available. This includes heated and cooled cupholders, a separate three-zone climate control system as well as dedicated USB-C ports so that those relegated to the back can at least keep their electronic devices charged up.

The AMG-GT 63 S E Performance starts from $162,000, though expect it to breach the $180,000 with some extras included, so get your wallets at the ready.

Discussion

Of all the Mercedes-AMG models, past and present, which one would you park in your garage?

There are more great Mercedes-AMG models than we can count. We’re partial to the mid-2000s to 2010s period where AMGs tested the limits of RWD with ultra-powerful V8s and V12s and their magnificent soundtracks. These cars were a handful, but that’s why everyone loved them. This group includes the CLK 63 AMG Black Series with 500 hp (and the W204 C63 sedan that shares its front suspension), the E63 AMG of the W212 generation, and the SL 65 AMG with an outrageous 738 lb-ft. Tell us about your favorites.

The Smaller SL 63 S E And AMG-GT 63 S E Coupe Performance Are Also Available Soon

Should the four-door, four-seat life not be for you, then perhaps consider the upcoming SL 63 S E Performance and the AMG-GT GT 63 S E Performance two-door coupe. They come with the same 4.0-liter V8/EV powerplant as the AMG-GT four-door, though they’ve been re-tuned to produce 805 hp and 1,047 lb-ft of torque. While the SL matches the four-door AMG-GT with its 2.8 second 0-60 mph effort, the two-door AMG-GT reaches the benchmark in 2.7 seconds.

It’s not exactly the Grand Canyon in terms of performance differential, though. They also have a similar active aerodynamic package to the AMG-GT four-door, which not only enhances downforce at high speed, but is also used to keep the most important areas of the car nice and cool.

The Mercedes S63 E Performance Provides Powerful Luxury

Power

For drivers more concerned about luxury than performance, then perhaps the S63 E Performance is more up your street. As essentially a luxury limo, the S63 offers a set of full-sized rear seats that are designed to be used by people, unlike the two sportier models already explored. The S63 comes with the same powertrain as the AMG-GT and SL 63, though it was tuned differently to produce less power at 791 hp, but more torque at 1,055 lb-ft.

It starts slightly cheaper than the other cars at $186,200, though by the time you add a few extras, expect to pay significantly more. Where the S63 really shines is in terms of luxury, especially in the rear. The plush seats can be had in a variety of designs and colors, while toys such as a four-zone climate control ensure the S63 can be a real home from home.

The S63 also gets an advanced air suspension system, meaning it irons out any bumps it comes across on the road. The advantage of the system is that it can also stiffen up the suspension so that it doesn’t flop over when asked to take a corner at speed, making it ideal for escaping any precarious situation.

Thanks to Mercedes’ beastly EV-boosted V8 powertrain, drivers of all types are well taken care of when looking to add a new Merc to their lives. Just try not to rack up those speeding tickets too quickly.
