The Tesla Cybertruck was launched last year after a four-year wait, and when it finally made its debut, it didn’t have all that Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised it would. Moreover, not all variants were available, like the range extender version with a claimed 470 miles of range. Now, Electrek has noticed that the automaker has quietly updated the details of this model, and the changes aren’t positive.
2024 Tesla Cybertruck
- Base MSRP
- $60,990
- Horsepower
- 600 hp
- 0-60 MPH
- 4.1 seconds
- Top Speed
- 112 mph
- Electric Range
- 340 miles
Tesla’s website now says that the dual-motor Cybertruck with a range extender will not manage 470+ miles of range, but 445+ miles. Without the range extender battery pack, the AWD Cybertruck is estimated to achieve only 325 miles of range, down from 340 miles. Worse still, the pack won’t arrive when expected, and reserving one costs more than before.
Range Extender Arrives Later Than Promised
The tri-motor Cybertruck with a range extender is still expected to provide 440 miles of range on standard wheels and tires, but it drops to 415+ miles when all-terrain tires are selected. Tesla expects the range extender upgrade to cost in the region of $16,000, but that could change between now and its actual rollout, which has been moved from “early 2025” to “mid 2025.”

Tesla Cybertruck: What We Were Promised Vs. What We Got
The Cybertruck has changed a lot since it first debuted in 2019.
In the meantime, reserving the pack now carries quadruple the cost, increasing from 500 bucks to $2,000. Unfortunately, it’s not refundable, and since the range extender pack is structurally mounted to the Cybertruck, you can’t take it out, so you’d better be sure that you want and need the bulky range extender before making payment.
Many Unknowns Remain
Tesla still has not revealed how much capacity this supplementary battery pack boasts, nor how much weight it adds to the electric behemoth. Some estimates put the optional upgrade at around 47 kWh with a weight figure in the region of 600 lbs. For the record, the Cybertruck already weighs some 6,660 lbs, but it’s worth noting that the extra bulk still keeps the Cybertruck considerably lighter than the 9,063-lb GMC Hummer EV.

Customers will now have more affordable options than last year.
We’ll have to wait for more details, but given that the range extender will take at least another half a year to arrive, it might be worth considering the 2025 Ramcharger instead, which boasts up to 690 miles of range. Alternatively, used Cybertrucks are coming down in price.
