Everyone knows that the Mahindra Thar 4X4, especially with the petrol engine, gives nightmares to its owners when it comes to fuel efficiency. However, recently an owner of a Thar petrol 4X4 has fitted his lifestyle off-roader with a CNG kit. What’s even more special is that this particular vehicle is India’s first automatic Thar with CNG. The owner of this SUV shares his experience of driving this unique CNG vehicle in Delhi.
The video showing the Mahindra Thar 4X4 automatic with CNG has been shared on YouTube by RNK Autos on their channel. It starts off with the host giving an introduction of the owner of this Mahindra Thar automatic with a CNG kit. Following the introduction, the vlogger starts asking him various questions on the experience of fitting this SUV with a CNG kit and driving it.
Why did the owner buy this SUV, and how much does he drive?
The host starts off by asking the owner whether, while buying this SUV, he had any other vehicle in mind that he wanted to buy. To this, he mentions that he bought it because one day he was sitting with someone who said something that caused him to buy this SUV the next day. So, he added that he did not look at any other vehicle to buy.
After this, he explains that he loves going to the mountains and has been to Ladakh in this SUV four times. He added that he has also done a number of other trips in the SUV. Presently, this vehicle has 50,000 km on the odometer, and it is only a year old.
Why add a CNG kit to a Mahindra Thar?
The host then asks the vlogger why he opted to add a CNG kit to his SUV, following which the owner explains that he annually drives around 70,000-80,000 km. So, to save some money on fuel running costs, he has added this 8 kg CNG tank and direct injection kit to his SUV.
He added that prior to this Thar petrol automatic 4X4, he used to drive a Honda Accord. The owner highlighted that he also had a CNG kit added to that vehicle, which was also automatic. In total, he drove that Honda Accord and reached 5.75 lakh km on the odometer.
What is the mileage with a CNG kit?
When asked about the mileage offered by the Thar petrol automatic 4X4, he stated that he has never calculated the exact mileage on this SUV. However, he states that when cruising on the highway at 80-90 kmph, the vehicle with its 8 kg CNG tank drives up to 200 km.
Meanwhile, in city and highway mixed driving conditions, it drops to 150 km. And if driven entirely in the city, he can drive only 80-100 km on a full tank of CNG. He added that despite this, so far he has saved lakhs in fuel costs as the standard petrol variant offers a maximum mileage of 7-10 kmpl.
CNG kit fitment and driving impressions
Following these conversations, the host then shows the fitment of the CNG kit. The vlogger opens the bonnet of the vehicle and shows that the CNG reducer, ECU, and everything have been fitted very cleanly, and there are no extra wires and pipes.
Finally, the vlogger then drives the SUV and states that despite being on CNG, there is no significant drop in power. Also, the owner in his review mentioned that many people complain that CNG kits are not as reliable with automatic transmission vehicles. However, he believes that if the driver drives the vehicle carefully, he does not have to worry about reliability.
