Mahindra currently has a strong focus on exports. It is expanding its presence in markets like Australia. Celebrated cricketer Matthew Hayden is now Mahindra’s brand face there. An Indian family has now bought the Scorpio-N, or the Scorpio as it is called in the country, and named it ‘Gabru’. The carmaker recently shared a video of the family doing explorations with the SUV, and sharing their ownership experience on their official YouTube channel.
The Saini family from Brabham has bought the vehicle in Black. They seem to have learnt about the Scorpio from social media and made the purchase from a dealership in Perth. They fell in love with the SUV right after having a test drive. They say it packs great value, is fuel-efficient and makes for a proper family car. The VFM aspect of the Scorpio is something most reviews from the country speak a lot about. The Saini’s Scorpio has captain seats in the second row and a registration plate that reads GABRU- which means ‘Boy’ in Punjabi.
The family has accessorised the vehicle tastefully, and in a way that would suit their adventures and exploration drives. It looks butch and capable.

Mahindra sells just two variants of the Scorpio in Australia- Z8 and Z8L- both come with 4WD. In India, the Scorpio comes with two engine options- the 2.2 mHawk diesel and 2.0 mStallion turbocharged petrol. Looks like Mahindra sells just the diesel version in Australia. It produces 175 PS and 400 Nm. As per the numbers released by ARAI, the diesel Scorpio-N returns a mileage of 15.42 kmpl on both the manual and automatic versions.
Key features offered on the top-spec include SONY 3D Immersive Audio- 12 Speakers with Sub-woofer, 6-way electric driver’s seat, 7-inch colour TFT drivers side cluster, front offroad camera with parking sensors, wireless charging, second-row AC vents, a sunroof, 4XPLOR, electronic parking brake, cruise control, power fold ORVM, automatic headlamps, and more.
The safety suite comprises ESP, ABS, EBD, traction control, rollover mitigation, trailer sway mitigation, brake disc wiping, hill hold, hill descent control, TPMS, and airbags. There is no ADAS on offer.
In Australia, the Scorpio Z8 has a drive-away price of $41,990, while the Z8L has $45,990. This makes it a better financial choice than many of its competitors.
Mahindra’s Business In Australia
For a manufacturer like Mahindra to establish its presence in a new country, it needs an influential face and Hayden fits right in. He had bought the vehicle in White but later converted it into the Black Edition. He now uses it for his off-road explorations and adventures and is even confident that he can use it as a caravan if needed. He has already installed a lot of accessories on the vehicle, and further plans to spec it with a nudge bar and AUX lights- something that would be of great use during expeditions.
Hayden’s daughter, a popular TV presenter, also owns an XUV 700 in Black. These boost the brand image and acceptance of the products. Mahindra also has a wide range of accessories and OEM fitments on sale in the country.
The company entered the Australian market in 2007 with the Pik-Up ute. Way back in time, it used to sell modernized versions of the Willys CJ-3B civilian Jeeps. Today, their portfolio includes the XUV 700, XUV 700 Black Edition, Scorpio and the S11 4X4 PIKUP (double cabin pickup ).
