Being a car enthusiast would make you do crazy stuff without second thoughts. We have, over the years, seen many such instances- from converting SUVs to office tables to mounting a Porsche 911 on the office wall. In this latest example, someone from Kerala built a new home and mounted his beloved Honda Civic on the roof-top/balcony.

Manaf Thottakath, an entrepreneur from Malappuram, Kerala, chose this least-expected way of expressing his love for his beloved machine. He owns a tastefully modified Honda Civic painted in a shade that looks like Nardo Grey, with a registration plate that reads KL 58 W 1008. The car has been fitted with aftermarket body kits, wheels, headlamps, a sunroof and sleek mirrors. It has also been lowered and probably has (had) an air suspension too.

The ‘Civic culture’ is strong in Kerala. You get to see many mods and builds based on the previous generation Civic in the state. There could be three main reasons for this- One, you could buy a used Civic for an extremely low price. Two, the car itself is cult. And three, being a tuner/ mod-friendly car, it would make the perfect test bed for enthusiasts. Besides, sourcing accessories, kits and aftermarket parts for the car is easy.

The state’s Motor Vehicle Department (MVD), however, hasn’t been tolerant towards mods and customs and often penalized them. There have also been instances where the MVD impounded modified vehicles and forcefully returned them to the stock form.

Circling back to the Nardo Grey Civic, the car was mounted on the roof using a crane. To ease up the process, several changes seem to have been made to it. Guessing from the video that has surfaced, the engine or parts of it could have been removed. Another video posted by an Instagrammer says ‘ I thought of starting the car and revving it on the rooftop, but that seems impossible at the moment, due to the modifications made to the car, before it was mounted here’.

In scenarios such as these, it is a common practice to drain out all the fluids and remove some mechanical components- especially those that are more prone to damage when left unused. Plus, you don’t need to see the internals, when you look at a showpiece- simple as that!

This Nardo Grey Civic has a huge fan following. It used to be a regular sight at various Motor Shows and car meet-ups organized across Kerala, by various colleges and clubs. Looks like the star car finally found the retirement that it deserves! Pictures and videos of the roof-mounted Civic are now doing rounds on Instagram, and gathering tons of interesting comments.

We remember seeing someone say ‘KDM- Kerala Domestic Market’ in the comments. Considering the state’s affinity for JDM and the tasteful builds and mods that you get to see here, this comment makes a lot of sense! In another comment, someone has said ‘ Love from Lahore, Pakistan’ hinting at cross-border admiration for this model and the build.

Another comment makes even more sense. It requests the owner to make a glass wall for the car, so that it stays clear of dust and rain. This could actually be a great idea. If done, it could look like someone placed a life-size scale model on his rooftop! ( Most licensed scale models come in fibreglass cases.)
