Nissan might not be getting ready to build the next generation of its Xterra off-roader, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t see the name sometime soon. Nismo Nick, a Nissan fanatic, salesperson, and official brand ambassador of Nismo performance recently posted to his Instagram that he would be building his own Project X. Promising a seriously over-the-top off-road build for SEMA 2025 that is likely going to get a little (or more than a little) help from the factory.

Nick Really Loves Nissans
Nismo Nick is a content creator who focuses exclusively on the Japanese brand. Which isn’t really a surprise since he sells Nissans for a living. He got some attention earlier this year by becoming the person to go to if you didn’t want to pay massive markups for a new Z.
While most of his content is related to Z-cars, he has started on some projects, including a restored vintage Maxima Wagon. He’s also done videos off-road a few times in a Nissan Titan Pro-4X.

Nissan Xterra Is Going To Every National Park With A Hole In The Roof
Enoch cut a hole in his Xterra. Now, he lives in it.

But last week, on his Instagram, Nismo Nick announced the start of a project he promises will be big: a year-long build “one of the wildest things ever dreamed up.”
He said that he has teamed up with “some very special people.” We don’t yet know who, and we’re going to have to wait to find out more. But with Nick officially a Nismo Parts USA brand ambassador, it’s almost certain that some serious Nissan and Nismo factory assistance is going to come with it. Stay, as they say, tuned.
Will New Xterra Build Get Nismo Factory Support?
It has us longing for the original Nissan Xterra, a Frontier-based off-roader Nissan built in two generations from 1999 to 2015. It offered useful features like a standard roof box and a completely flat floor with the seats folded. It also had serious off-road capability with 4×4 and locking differentials on the options list. There were stick-shift versions, and Nissan even sold it with a supercharger for a few years. The Xterra has long been rumored to be returning as a factory off-roader, and this build could tie nicely into the launch campaign.

Nissan Frontier Forsberg Edition Is $10k Worth Of NISMO Off-Road Parts
It will debut to the public at the Chicago Auto Show alongside the pole-to-pole Ariya.
We’re hoping that Project X will be an extreme overlanding version of the Xterra. But with Nismo on board, it might be more likely to be something modern. Like a new Frontier pickup, because the Nissan Titan is not long for this world. The Pro-4X Frontier is already a capable off-roader but would make an excellent showcase for the Nismo off-road parts catalog and is a solid overland rig.
We don’t want to speculate too much, but Nismo Nick says he’ll be dropping more clues soon. This is just the start of a build thread that will last until the debut of the overlanding rig, which is set to happen at SEMA 2025.
