A Night Of Supra Perfection In Tokyo

The A80 Toyota Supra is undoubtedly one of the most legendary JDM cars ever crafted. Ironically, spotting one in Japan’s capital city these days is a rare treat.

Whether due to over-exportation or local owners safeguarding their appreciating assets, it’s uncommon to see a MkIV Supra cruising Tokyo streets. This rarity makes Zumi’s Supra even more remarkable, especially once you get up close and soak in the details.

I first saw Zumi’s car at Daikoku PA a few months back. It immediately captured my attention, an impressive feat given how many amazing cars stop by the famous parking area under Yokohama’s Bay Bridge.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but even as a Toyota enthusiast, the MkIV never quite resonated with me. But Zumi’s Supra turned that view upside down. Whether it was the aggressive Ridox body kit or the white RAYS Volk Racing TE37 Super Lap wheels that hooked me – perhaps the combination of both – after spending the night with Zumi and learning all about his Toyota, there’s nothing I don’t love.

Despite its show car appearance, the Ridox wide-body conversion – fitted at Max Orido’s 130R Yokohama shop – and extra aero upgrades serve a functional purpose. Zumi regularly hits the track, chasing better lap times at Tsukuba Circuit. He hopes to compete in next year’s Attack event.

The +30mm front and +50mm rear widened fenders house 18×10.5-inch and 18×11-inch TE37 SLs, this clean look perfectly complemented by Ridox aero elements and Craft Square mirrors.

Zumi’s A80 isn’t just about appearances; its performance matches its aggressive styling. The car’s original 2JZ-GTE engine has been treated to a comprehensive HKS upgrade that includes forged pistons, forged connecting rods, cams, intercooler and radiator.

But the centrepiece is the HKS T04Z turbocharger. Let me assure you, there’s no mistaking the open wastegate noises of a big-single-turbo-equipped A80 Supra flying up beside you.

With the RAYS wheels providing ample clearance, the front end sports an Endless 6-pot big brake kit, while Brembo R callipers feature out back.

Inside the cabin, the Supra’s motorsports intentions are clear: it’s stripped down, caged, with only one seat – a Recaro SPG. You’ll also find a TRD meter set, and row of Omori gauges alongside an HKS F-CON ECU and HKS EVC boost controller.

Spending the night with this Supra, immersed in its perfectly balanced chassis and period-correct details, has transformed my view on A80s. The thrill of wheel spin from 1st to 4th gear, the symphony of the screaming T04Z, and the aggressive stance of the Ridox kit and TE37s offer so much to love.

It kind of sucks that MkIV Supras like this one are so few and far between nowadays – especially in their JDM motherland. But as younger enthusiasts like Zumi acquire these cars, I hope to see more of them built up and used as intended, rather than being relegated to garage queen duty.
