Affordable 20,000 euro (Rs 18 lakh) Volkswagen EV to arrive before 2030: CEO, Oliver Blume - Times of India

Volkswagen, Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Blume, stated at a conference on November 15, that the automaker has not yet decided on the production of a 20,000-euro (Rs 18.03 lakh) electric car. However, Blume is confident that by the second half of the decade, Volkswagen can achieve this goal, as per a Reuters report.

Blume identified that the key factor in reducing electric car prices is lowering battery costs.Speaking at the Sueddeutsche Zeitung Wirtschaftsgipfel conference in Berlin, he highlighted the company’s strategy to produce a unified battery cell, anticipating a 50% reduction in battery costs.
In March 2023, Volkswagen outlined plans for an all-electric car, currently in development and set to be priced at 25,000 euros. The vehicle is scheduled for a 2025 launch, featuring a 450-km range and a 20-minute charging time from 10% to 80%.
Although the company had previously mentioned working on a 20,000-euro vehicle, no additional details were provided. Blume emphasised the company’s commitment to delivering the right products at the right price, particularly targeting consumers who lack the option to install a home charging station.
Blume acknowledged challenges hindering electric car demand, including inflationary pressures, insufficient charging infrastructure, and the discontinuation of subsidies. He stressed the need to persuade a broader consumer base, beyond early adopters, to embrace electric car technology.
