Cars like the Ferrari Enzo and Honda NSX are excellent to drive, and so adored partly because they had input from Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, respectively. A similar move from Aston could help it create a modern icon, but Fideli admits that Aston Martin is lucky to be in the position to consider the next few years at its own pace. Without a big engine supplier, Aston may have been on the verge of obsolescence.
Referring to looming Euro 7 emissions regulations, Fideli said, “Without Mercedes, we could be in trouble.” This relationship should serve Aston well as it introduces electrified products too.
“Mercedes isn’t just an engine for us, it’s the base electrical architecture. We did integration of new components into the base Mercedes architecture [for the DB12]. This collaboration will remain in the future.”
Let’s hope the Aston Martin EV rides better than a Mercedes-Benz EQS…
