BMW Drivetrain Malfunction: Causes And Fixes

BMWs are known for great handling, advanced electronics, and powerful engines. Although these vehicles are superb in many areas, they have their issues. One issue reported by some BMW owners is the ‘Drivetrain Malfunction’ error message on the dashboard display.

This error message can be worrying as its purpose is to warn the driver of a potentially serious issue. However, it does not necessarily mean the vehicle is on the verge of a breakdown. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the drivetrain malfunction message in a BMW, including the cost to have it fixed.

What Does The BMW Drivetrain Malfunction Mean?

BMW, like the other manufacturers, uses self-monitoring technology to log faults and alert the driver of a current or pending issue. A drivetrain is the combination of multiple parts, including the axles, driveshafts, transmission, differentials, and transfer case (if equipped). The drivetrain malfunction message does not solely indicate the issue is only with the drivetrain components. The message can also be set from powertrain-related faults.

‘Powertrain’ refers to the drivetrain components in addition to the car’s engine.

Can I Drive My BMW With A Drivetrain Malfunction Error?

BMW’s Digital Motor Electronics (DME) system will limit the vehicle to moderate operation and prevent more severe damage. During this time, it’s advisable to drive your BMW moderately. The car typically limits vehicle speed to a maximum of 40 mph.

In most cases, you can continue driving the vehicle while the drivetrain malfunction error is active. However, depending on the reason behind the warning, damage may occur with continued operation. If there is any reduction in power or acceleration, we recommend having your BMW checked out as soon as possible.

How To Fix The BMW Drivetrain Malfunction

In order to prevent the drivetrain malfunction warning from continuously appearing on the dash, you’ll have to repair the cause. The first step in repairing the drivetrain error is having the vehicle scanned for faults. It’s not uncommon for other warning messages or fault codes to be stored while the error message is displayed, including the following message: “maximum drivetrain output not available”. These other warnings aid in diagnosing the root cause of the warning.

To resolve the drivetrain malfunction issue, these are some of the steps you can take:

  1. Check the fluid levels. It’s not too uncommon to find low engine or coolant levels triggering the drivetrain malfunction message. Inspect the engine for fluid leaks if the fluid is low. Top the systems off with the correct fluid if needed.
  2. Check vacuum hoses for air leaks. A common failure is the Postive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
  3. Use higher-grade fuel. Some BMW specialists and customers have reported low quality fuel being the cause of the drivetrain malfunction message. Purchasing a higher octane fuel from a popular gas station reduces the likelihood of getting poor quality or contaminated fuel.
  4. Perform a tune-up. Worn spark plugs are a common cause of the drivetrain malfunction error. Typically, there will be misfire codes stored along with the error message. Furthermore, clogged catalytic converters are often caused by raw fuel entering the exhaust as a result of a cylinder misfire.

Always have the vehicle’s computer system scanned before replacing parts.

How To Reset The BMW Drivetrain Malfunction Message

It’s possible that a simple reset could remove this error message. To reset it, turn the vehicle off for 5–10 minutes and restart the engine.

If the malfunction reappears, faults are detected and repairs are most likely needed.

Some drivers have reported that the drivetrain BMW warning disappeared after restarting the engine.

How Much Does It Cost To Fix A BMW Drivetrain Malfunction?

Depending on the direct cause of the BMW drivetrain malfunction, the repair cost can vary greatly. In most cases, a drivetrain malfunction error repair will not break the bank. However, there are some reports of hefty repair bills coming in as high as $2,500. Repair prices soar even higher if serious engine or transmission damage has occurred. One also has to consider model-specific costs; the same part will very likely be pricier on a 7 Series than a 2 Series.

Before any repairs are made, we recommend checking for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) service campaigns, recalls, and warranty coverage.

BMWs such as the 3 Series and 5 Series are modified quite often. Certain vehicle modifications can lead to powertrain and drivetrain issues. According to this BMW service bulletin, aftermarket parts or tuners can lead to the drivetrain malfunction.

Aftermarket sensors that do not meet BMW OE standards can also lead to the drivetrain malfunction.

There is usually a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) or additional warning message associated with the drivetrain malfunction error. So, there shouldn’t be too much of a mystery as to what has triggered the fault.

Repairs range from a simple tank of gas or a fuel additive up to transmission repairs, engine repairs, and/or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) / DME reprogramming.

This warning message is designed to avoid vehicle damage. We recommend avoiding prolonged driving with the drivetrain malfunction message active. Have your vehicle scanned, and try a simple engine restart as your starting steps. Check your vehicle’s fluid levels and for fluid leaks and avoid aftermarket performance parts as they can lead to the malfunction as well.
