CCS Alliance Considering Tesla's NACS Connector As The Standard EV Charger

CharIN was founded by Audi, BMW, Daimler, and several other automakers. It is not a government agency. What it is is a group of entities that are focused on the goal of increasing electromobility worldwide in all its forms. Although it cannot dictate that EV manufacturers use a specific type of connector, it is a powerful coalition that makes recommendations it considers will help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

CharIN has noted members’ interest in the NACS connector but notes that it “is not yet a standard and does not provide an open charging ecosystem for the industry to build upon.” Therefore, CharIN suggests that the “NACS should be submitted to standards bodies [such as ISO, IEC, IEEE, SAE, ANSI] to unify the charging standards market in North America.”

If this happens, third-party charger manufacturers like Blink Charging, ChargePoint Holdings, and EVgo will have to accelerate the adoption of Tesla’s connector if they want to remain relevant. Again, we should reiterate that CCS and MCS are not going anywhere yet, but who knows for how long?
