Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon Trucks Damaged in Failed Mexico Train Heist

Authorities thwarted a robbery at a rail yard in Mexico this past week, during which a group of thieves attempted to remove a new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup truck from a stationary railcar. While the perps were unable to escape with the stolen vehicles, the trucks didn’t survive the incident unscathed.

According to Debate, the robbery attempt took place at around 1 a.m. CT on Thursday, at the Ferromex rail yard outside Gómez Palacio, Durango. A group of men reportedly carrying weapons entered the rail yard before locating the rail car in question. The thieves then broke the lock on the car, allowing access to the vehicles inside.

The suspects were quickly spotted by passing members of the Municipal Police, who noticed the suspicious behavior. The police’s presence alone was apparently enough to thwart the criminal activity, according to a post in the Emergencias Region Centro Sur Facebook group. The thieves fled the scene, leaving a white Chevy Colorado and a gray GMC Canyon behind. The Chevy’s tailgate was damaged when the thieves tried to take it off the train, whereas the GMC was later destroyed when it was hit by a passing train.

According to a local source speaking with The Drive, the thieves are suspected to be part of a local gang. The trucks themselves were likely on their way to Mexico from GM’s Wentzville (Missouri) Assembly when they were destroyed, so there will certainly be some insurance payouts involved. The damage to the Colorado isn’t all that bad, and the truck may find its way into service in the near future. The same can’t be said for the GMC, which shouldn’t be surprising for anyone familiar with train strikes.
