Evolution Of A Classic: The VW Passat B1 Variant With Ultrace History

The Volkswagen Passat is a name synonymous with reliability. When it comes to tuning culture, however, the model is often overshadowed by its sportier siblings. Yet, the Passat B1, particularly in its station wagon form, holds a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate the charm of vintage German engineering.

This is the story of one such car, a 1979 Passat B1 Variant LS (Type 33), that has undergone a remarkable transformation under the care of two passionate owners.

The journey of this Passat began with Przemek Stojek, a well-known figure in the Polish custom car scene.

Przemek’s love for unique and classics led him to this rare find in Szczecin, Poland. Despite its rarity and the high prices that usually accompany old Passat Variants, Przemek managed to secure the B1 and immediately set to work. His vision was clear: a low-slung, big-wheeled, head-turner built with an emphasis on stance style.

Under Przemek’s ownership, the Passat was fitted with a custom air ride suspension system by Air-Riders in Gliwice, featuring two Viair 480C compressors, Metal Work valves, and Rubena 130 airbags. This setup allowed the car to achieve an impressively low stance.

The Passat rolled on unique 17-inch wheels crafted from 14-inch Mercedes-Benz W201 centers with RH ZW1 parts. A Kamei front bumper lip added a touch of aggression to the front end.

The interior remained original save for a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel, Momo gearknob, and a custom trunk layout featuring a period-correct manometer.

Przemek’s efforts didn’t go unrewarded. The car debuted at Ultrace 2018 (Raceism at the time) in Wrocław, and clinched second place in the Classic Era category at the Tuning Kingz Fabryka event the same year.

Despite this immediate success, Przemek knew there was more potential to unlock, but fate had other plans. In 2020, the car found a new home with Arek.

Arek has taken Przemek’s foundation and elevated the car to new heights. Since acquiring the B1, it has been treated to a comprehensive rebuild to improve almost every aspect of the vehicle.

One of the standout features under Arek’s ownership is the custom-made 17-inch wheels with center-locking. Alongside these wheels, the air ride system was refurbished, ensuring the Passat rides and handles better than ever. The car was given a fresh layer of paint as well.

Under the hood, several components were removed for a more streamlined appearance. Twin Weber carburetors, a modified camshaft, and a custom exhaust system have been added, along with a Kamei air intake scoop, and a unique engine cover that never fails to draw attention.

Exterior enhancements continue with the addition of a period rooftop cargo carrier, aftermarket mirrors, and rear window louvers. The Kamei theme visible throughout the build remains as nods to Przemek’s original vision, blending in perfectly with the new modifications.

Arek’s passion for the Passat shows no signs of waning, even though he has several old-school VAG cars in his garage that also vie for his attention. He has plans for an air-ride-equipped trailer to complement the wagon – a project that promises to make this already unique Volkswagen even more extraordinary. Despite receiving various offers for the Passat, Arek is committed to keeping it for many years to come, continuing its stylish legacy.

In a car show world where the spotlight often falls on the more obvious choices, this Passat B1 Variant stands tall. It’s a rolling blend of history and Euro-style modifications. And as it continues to evolve, it’s clear that the wagon’s journey is far from over.
