We have said this before- India is not for beginners! The insane, bizarre stuff that you get to see here is difficult to find elsewhere. From cars falling off flyovers to bullet Baba and tying Nimbu Mirchi on satellite launch vehicles, we’ve got it all. In a recent, equally amusing addition, a Gujarati family gave their beloved car a formal burial ceremony that was attended by 1500 people!

A video of the incident, shared on X (previously Twitter) is now viral. It shows a Silver Maruti Wagon R being driven into a pit that’s at least 15 feet deep, through a slope. Huge fanfare can be seen around.
The car seems to be a 2010 model and should thus be at least 12 years old. It is decorated with flower garlands and has a roof full of rose petals ( sunroof was a thing only until the ‘rose roof’ made its entry!). The X-post also shows the car being covered with a Green robe and people showering flower petals on it. This is, but the burial video of a Wagon R. It moans the death/end of the road for the family’s lucky car.
Sanjay Polara, a farmer from Gujarat’s Amreli district, organized this rare farewell function for his car. It had around 1500 attendees, among whom were seers, saints, family members, and more. The burial took place in the Padarshinga village of Lathi taluka. The 12-year-old car had Sanjay’s farm as its final resting place.
The event had the family members perform puja and people showering rose petals, priests chanting mantras and finally an excavator pouring clay and sand to safely bury the car down. A hundred years from now, someone might dig out the fossil of a fossil fuel car! Sorry, bad joke…
Coming back, the owner of this car owns and runs a construction business in Surat. He feels his success has something to do with this car, and considers it lucky. Thus, he wanted to give it a farewell that even his future generations would remember, and further recognize this Wagon R as the lucky car of their great-grandfather. He did not want to sell it at all, probably in an effort to make it stay with the family forever.
Sanjay told the media: “I bought this car nearly 12 years ago, and it brought prosperity to the family. Apart from seeing success in business, my family also gained respect. The vehicle proved lucky for my family and me. Hence, instead of selling it, I gave it a samadhi at my farm as a tribute.”
The man spent 4 lakh rupees on conducting the ceremony- almost equal to the Wagon R price in 201o. The burial was done in traditional Hindu fashion, and he even planted a tree at the place. This is again, a common practice during Hindu burials. Sanjay even organized a grand feast for the attendees.
On a serious note, a car being treated so right and with so much emotional connection is not an everyday sight in our country. The efforts this guy has put into the event are to be praised.
Many Hindus in India regard vehicles highly. In fact, there are elaborate religious ceremonies (Poojas) that are performed while a new vehicle is bought. During Dusshera (Dasara in Southern India) and Deepawali (Diwali in Northern India), there’s an annual pooja performed for vehicles, which is meant to make them perform reliably and safely. It’s called Ayudha Pooja in the South of the country, and Vishwakarma Pooja in the North of the country.
