Call it small but mighty. There’s a new performance option for those that want to take BMW’s X1 to an entirely new level.
The 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive packs in the most powerful version of BMW’s modular 4-cylinder engine yet, pushing out 312 horsepower — enough to launch the Sport Activity Vehicle from 0 to 60 in just over 5 seconds.
Based on the third-generation X1 package, the M35i adds a variety of features to enhance handling as well as performance, including the Adaptive M Suspension and M Compound brakes.
Distinctive “M” features
It also boasts a number of distinctive design features “typically reserved for high-performance cars from BMW M,” noted the Bavarian automaker, including quad exhaust pipes. Buyers also will find a wide range of options, such as M Sport seats featuring illuminated M logos.
In typical BMW fashion, the automaker e-mailed over a 3,000-word press release detailing virtually every nut and bolt fitted onto the X1 M35i xDrive. Here are some of the highlights.
Powertrain
The 2024 X1 M35i xDrive is motivated by what BMW describes as “the most potent 4-cylinder version” of its modular gas engine line-up. It’s a 2.0-liter package using the German marque’s M TwinPower technology to produce 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Among other upgrades, said BMW, the engine gets “redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and changes to the camshaft timing, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing.”
Surprisingly, the design uses the Miller combustion cycle more typically associated with hybrids and other packages putting the emphasis on fuel economy, rather than performance. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until closer to the crossover’s on-sale date to find out what sort of mileage it can deliver. But, in terms of performance, the X1 M35i will take just 5.2 seconds to hit 60, with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
The engine is paired to a 7-speed double-clutch Steptronic transmissions with M Sport Boost. Shift paddles allow it to be operated in manual mode. A driver can pull and hold the left paddle for at least one second to switch powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings, BMW notes. Power is delivered to all four wheels, with a bias towards the rear. An M-version electronic limited slip differential in the Steptronic ensures maximum grip by the front tires.
The 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive also gets two pair of twin exhaust pipes, the exhaust note tuned to deliver a resonant “bark” when motivated by a heavy right foot.
More than just a pocket rocket
As you’d expect from a BMW bearing an “M” badge, the 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive can do more than deliver burnouts when the stoplight turns green.
It comes standard with the automaker’s Adaptive M Suspension which helps minimize jounce on rough road surfaces and improved grip under aggressive driving.
Sport steering also is a standard feature. It uses a Servotronic speed-sensitive power power assistance system with a direct rack ration.
For buyers looking to maximize their thrills, the 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive becomes first M performance model to offer the automaker’s M Compound brakes. They’re a four-piston, four-caliper design with inner-vented discs to minimize fade, even when pushing the crossover to the limits.
Exterior design
As one would expect of an M performance model, the X1 M35i gets a number of distinctive design touches, including a double-kidney grille with vertical double bars, M exterior mirror caps and that double-double exhaust.
The emphasis is on functional, with the focus on improved cooling and reduced drag. There’s a front apron with larger air intakes for the engine, transmission and brakes. The crossover also features large side skirt extensions, a modified roof spoiler and a rear apron.
There are three 20-inch wheels designs available, though only one is a unique “M” package.
Interior design
Among other standard gear, the 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive features an Alcantara-trimmed instrument panel, “Aluminum Hexacube Dark” interior trim, an anthracite-colored headliner and M door sills, pedals and graphics on the X1’s curved LED display.
There are a number of options, including those illuminated Sport seats with extensive electric adjustability, an M leather steering wheel, as well as a head-up display.
There are the requisite USB ports and tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as wireless smartphone charging. The X1 also comes with a broad array of advanced driver assistance and safety systems.
For those considering more functional applications, the X1 M35i features 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which jumps to 46.9 cf if the split 40:20:40 rear seat is folded over.
Pricing and availability
The 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive will carry a starting MSRP of $49,900 – though expect to see that jump fast if you check off from the extensive options list. And add another $995 for delivery and handling fees.
The performance model will go on sale at U.S. dealerships in October. As with all other versions of the BMW X1, the M performance package is built in Regensburg, Germany.
