Driving on hilly roads or ghat sections is often extremely tricky. If you are not familiar or experienced on such roads, the chances of crashing your vehicles and getting into tricky situations are pretty high. A tourist couple from West Bengal realised that during their recent visit to Goa. In this trip, there Hyundai i20 hatchback fell into a deep gorge and were later rescued by local authorities. Video of the incident has been circulating online and shows how lucky they were to escape from this accident.
The video has been shared by In Goa 24×7 on their YouTube channel. In this video, we see a person narrating the whole incident while showing the rescue operation. As per the video, the tourists from West Bengal were in Goa for an event and were returning from Dudhsagar waterfall when this accident occured.
The accident happened on the Mollen-Collem border. This area has several narrow and curvy roads. We are not sure if the tourists were driving the car rashly or did they lose failed to notice a curve in front of them and crashed into the gorge.
There are reports that suggest thata dog had come in front of the car and the driver had swerved the vehicle away from the dog to avoid a crash. There is no confirmation about the same though. The car actually fell down from the road and was in the water.
The car fell on its side and was stuck in water between two rocks. The rocks is what probably saved the tourists. The reports mention that there were two people in the car and the car was actually rented by the couple for the road trips in Goa. It was a major accident and thankfully both driver and passenger escaped the crash without any serious injuries.
As the car was in water, the tourists had little time to escape. They somehow managed to get out and stand on one of the rocks in the gorge until rescue came. We are not sure if any locals had seen the crash and fall into the gorge or was it the tourist who had called for help. The electricity department and local police soon came to the rescue and rescued the passengers.
We can see the woman walking up to a safe spot using a ladder that the electricity department had offered for rescue. Driving through ghat sections or curvy roads in hilly regions are extremely risky and one has to be alert while on such roads. Always maintain a safe speed and do not overtake on a curve or on a road where you can’t see the road ahead.
If you are driving downhill, utilise engine breaking and drive on a lower gear to control the speed. Do not use breaks excessively as it may overheat the breaks and that would lead to brake failure.
If you are not confident, do not drive through such sections after dark. Also maintain a safe distance from vehicle in front of you which would allow you ample time to slow down in case of an emergency.
