Goodwood F1 Feature: The 1959 Aston Martin DBR4 – Where The F1 Journey Began

I’m not a huge F1 aficionado, but I sure can appreciate the technology, speed, and passion that drives their racers, teams, and fans. And I can also appreciate the origins of F1, and how these cars became something so special. When you see one, like this 1959 Aston Martin DBR4, you can just imagine what it must have been like driving these machines, all out, back in the day. Tiny tires, mediocre suspension geometry, and lackluster power, are all realities in these cars if you look at them completely analytically and in comparison to today. But there are two problems with that. One, they were built many years ago and were the highest technology and performance in their day. And two, these things are absolutely gorgeous!

I mean just look at this thing. Whether the DBR4 is going around the track or sitting still, this is one special ride and I dig it. Don’t you? Check out the car, the history, and more in the video below from Goodwood.

Video Description:

The future looks bright for Aston Martin in the F1 world. Adrian Newey is already champing at the bit to develop a championship winning car for Lawrence Stroll. With Alonso behind the wheel there is a real chance that Aston Martin could win its first Formula 1 world title.

However, 2021 was not its first foray in F1. The company’s journey started in 1959 with the DBR4 – a car that Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori raced in period.

Despite having drivers of this level, it was not a success. Ignoring a 2nd place in a non-championship race at Silverstone, the DBR4 didn’t finish higher than 6th.

Even though it wasn’t successful, it still remains one of the prettiest grand prix cars of the era.
