Wrong-side driving is a major issue in many Indian states, leading to instances where this irresponsible behavior has caused major accidents. Here we have one such incident from Patna, Bihar, where a Kia Seltos driver blocked the path of a Tata Harrier belonging to a government official who was driving on the wrong side of the road.
The video was shared by Prateek Singh on his YouTube channel, originally sent to him by a follower. The entire incident was recorded on the dash camera of the Kia Seltos. The footage shows the Seltos driving on the Mithapur flyover in Patna. As it descends the flyover, a Tata Harrier suddenly cuts across to the wrong side of the road, directly in front of the Seltos.
The Kia Seltos driver noticed the Harrier approaching from the wrong side, and it is clear from the video that the Harrier was being driven recklessly. The Seltos driver stopped the SUV in front of the Harrier, which had a government official’s vehicle registration board on its front bumper.
The Harrier driver gestured and demanded that the Seltos driver move out of the way. However, the Seltos driver refused, prompting the Harrier driver to exit his vehicle. He approached the driver’s side door of the Seltos and began arguing with its driver. The Harrier driver mentioned that he was a government officer, to which the Seltos driver calmly replied that traffic rules apply to everyone.
The Seltos driver stated that he would not reverse his car, and if the Harrier driver insisted on driving on the wrong side, he could drive around the Seltos. The Seltos driver also informed the Harrier driver that all his actions and the wrong-side driving were being recorded on the dashcam, but this did not deter the Harrier driver from using abusive language.
Locals gathered around, and the government official created a scene at the spot. Eventually, realizing that the Seltos driver would not yield, the Harrier driver maneuvered his car around and drove off on the wrong side. The Tata Harrier’s registration number is clearly visible in the video. We also see that the window glass on the Harrier is tinted which is again illegal to do in India.
The Seltos driver stated that he would not move and that the Harrier driver could call the police if he wished. He mentioned that posting the video online would not be useful, as the majority of police officers in Bihar are corrupt and unlikely to take action against the offender.
Driving on the wrong side is extremely dangerous, especially when vehicles are smoothly passing through the correct lane, as seen in the video. The Harrier driver knowingly drove on the wrong side and attempted to intimidate the Seltos driver. The Seltos driver remained extremely calm throughout the conversation, which is commendable. Engaging in an argument in such situations can be perilous, as it may escalate into a physical altercation.
Police from different states have taken action against offenders whenever such videos have surfaced. It is hoped that the same will occur in this case, and the driver of the Tata Harrier will be fined for his irresponsible behavior as well as for the tinted windows.
