The first of the Honda CR-V generations dates back to the ’90s and immediately struck a chord with Americans, who have been buying it in droves ever since. For the 2002-plus model years, a redesign of the Honda CR-V hit the streets with a roomier body but still no V6 option, as some rivals offered. The 2006 facelift came with a mild restyle, more safety equipment, and a five-speed automatic transmission. The third of the CR-V generations upped refinement and brought in a larger 2.4L engine. The fourth-gen car retained the basic powertrain but renewed everything else, gaining a sharper look for its 2015 facelift, along with a CVT to replace the old five-speed auto, and introducing the first CR-V hybrid. The fifth-gen car introduced turbo power for the first time across the Honda CR-V generations, and sold well until the sixth generation replaced it in 2022 with a hybrid-heavy lineup that comes with a redesigned powertrain and innovative transmission that aim to provide more driving pleasure than a drone-prone CVT.
2023-Now Honda CR-V 6th Gen (RS)
The sixth-gen CR-V adopts the Honda family look established with the latest Accord and continues with the tried-and-tested 190-hp 1.5L turbo-four and CVT. The hybrid gets an entirely new powertrain with Honda’s latest dual-speed transmission that occasionally drives the wheels using the 2.0L gas engine but mostly serves as a power generator for the electric motors. It develops 204 hp.

The redesign of the fifth-gen Honda CR-V debuted for 2017 and retained the old 2.4L engine in 184-hp tune but finally added a punchier alternative in the shape of a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 190 hp but a lot more mid-range torque. FWD and AWD were still offered, and the sole transmission was a CVT.
