Last week, Hyundai’s N Vision 74 hydrogen fuel cell hybrid concept made its U.S. debut at Automobility LA.
Revealing Hyundai’s N sub-brand electrification vision, this futuristic concept is the latest in the brand’s commitment to zero-emissions technologies. Launched in 2015, the vision of the N brand revolves around a commitment to sustainable performance – one demonstrated in the hydrogen-powered N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo.
What was once seen as a dream has become a reality, as the N Vision 74 represents seven years of technological development in hydrogen fuel cell power. The N brand’s commitment lies in its desire to “deliver an optimistic future for car enthusiasts, regardless of propulsion type.”
The N Vision 74 and its rear-mounted 9.3 lb. capacity hydrogen fuel tanks can be refueled within five minutes and also features dual-charging capability. The 85kW fuel cell converts hydrogen to electricity, which charges the 62kWh battery. Sharing the same 800V battery technology from Hyundai’s e-GMP platform with fast-charge capability, the battery features fuel and charging ports for both hydrogen and electricity, allowing flexibility for driving performance. Hyundai’s vision is to implement a battery capable of “spirited driving on the highway or performance driving on racetracks.”
Heat management is one of the unique challenges facing the N Vision 74 hydrogen hybrid architecture. A key development objective of the N Vision 74 is delivering the highest driving emotion for the operator, even under severe track conditions. With this in mind, engineers designed three independent cooling channels for the battery, motor, and fuel cell, optimizing energy efficiency and resistance to performance degradation.
