Hyundai Introduces Free Anti-Theft Software Upgrade For Various Models

Hyundai is taking an innovative approach to prevent vehicle theft – introducing a free software upgrade for its vehicles without push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices. This protective measure comes on the heels of increasing reports of thefts targeting these cars, which have become particularly popular on social media channels such as TikTok.

Launching an innovative service campaign, Hyundai is offering a free software upgrade to almost 4 million vehicles. Starting on February 14th and rolling out over the course of 3 years until June 2023, eligible vehicles ranging from model year 2017-2021 Elantra’s, 2015-2019 Sonata’s, and 2020/2021 Venue models will benefit from this technology. By visiting any participating Hyundai dealership, customers can enjoy enhanced anti-theft features while being provided with window decals, giving potential thieves notice that such measures secure their vehicle.

“Hyundai is committed to ensuring the quality and integrity of our products through continuous improvement and is pleased to provide affected customers with an additional theft deterrent through this software upgrade,” said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “We have prioritized the upgrade’s availability for owners and lessees of our highest-selling vehicles and those most targeted by thieves in order for dealers to service them first.”

Hyundai is dedicated to vehicle security and has equipped all vehicles since November 2021 with an engine immobilizer. To further protect its customers, the brand also offers free steering wheel locks through law enforcement agencies for distribution within local communities.

Despite not having engine immobilizers, Hyundai is ensuring that model year vehicles between 2011 and 2022 are secure. Customers unable to accommodate the software upgrade will be reimbursed for purchasing a steering wheel lock; further details surrounding this program will soon follow.

Hyundai vehicles with the standard “turn-key-to-start” system have recently been upgraded to incorporate an innovative security feature. The update enhances door locking functions, setting off a factory alarm and activating an “ignition kill” mode when subjected to theft attempts. Customers must use their key fob to unlock their car to disable this measure and start their vehicle as usual.

Customers can receive notifications through various methods, including mail or email. A dedicated website allows customers to access more information by inputting their vehicle’s VIN number to determine eligibility for software installation at no cost.
