Hyundai To Fight Cheap Chinese Imports With $21,500 Casper Electric Vehicle

The electric version will reportedly be built alongside its ICE-powered sibling at Hyundai’s Gwangju factory in South Korea. According to The Chosun Daily, Casper Electric will utilize a lithium iron phosphate battery, powerful enough to provide a combined range of up to 186 miles – not bad for a small electric runabout. It will use BorgWarner’s integrated drive module for compact electric vehicles.

Whereas the Hyundai-Kia K1 platform underpins the gas-powered Casper, reports suggest the Casper Electric will be based on the Hyundai-Kia SA platform used for the Kia Ray EV.

At 102.1 inches long, the Casper might even be too small for European tastes. ANE claims a slightly longer prototype (by 8 – 10 inches) has been spotted testing in Sweden, suggesting a slightly lengthened wheelbase may be offered to appeal to EU customers.

An efficient 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine powers the regular Casper, but this variant is not sold in Europe.
