Lucid's Baby SUV Could Be Called The Lucid Earth, Perfect For Hunting The Tesla Model Y

Key Takeaways

  • Lucid Motors’ trademark suggests upcoming electric crossover will be named Earth.
  • The crossover aims to compete with Tesla’s Model Y with a $48,000 MSRP.
  • Production of Lucid’s midsize electric crossover is scheduled for 2026.

A trio of new trademark filings at the United States Patent and Trademark Office provide clues to the name of the next electric crossover from Lucid Motors: Earth. First reported by InsideEVs, the trademarks are for “Earth,” “Lucid Earth,” and “Earth Dream Edition,” indicating plans for a regular model and a range-topper (we’ll let you know if another trademark for an Earth Sapphire appears, but we doubt that will be a consideration for several years yet).

The most likely application for these names is the midsize Tesla Model Y rival that Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson recently teased for introduction in 2026.

Lucid Motors

Lucid Motors was founded in California in 2007 as a manufacturer and developer of battery technology, with several former Tesla engineers and executives joining the company since then. Development of its first car began in 2014, with the Air revealed as a luxury electric vehicle in December 2016. It has since revealed its first SUV, the Gravity, but work continues on battery development, which Aston Martin is set to take advantage of in the future.

What Is The Lucid Earth?

The Lucid Earth name is expected to find its way to a “high-volume midsize” electric crossover, and this crossover is slated to enter production in 2026. When it enters the market, Lucid wants its MSRP to start at $48,000. That’s more than the cheapest version of the Model Y (Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive), which, at the time of writing, has an MSRP before tax credits and other deductions of $44,990.

A slightly higher price may make the crossover a little more difficult to sell, but the company’s Air sedan has already proven itself to be more luxurious and more spacious than the alternative Model S from Tesla, so there won’t be a direct conflict between the two. That said, the closeness in pricing is no coincidence, and Lucid wants large sales volumes from this product.

A Long Wait Ahead

CarBuzz has reached out to Lucid to request information on this trademark, but as a future product, automakers typically refuse to divulge any information. We’ll update this article if Lucid’s media relations team opts to be the exception, but we suspect that this name will not be confirmed for some time yet. Regardless, we know that Lucid’s next product is not the Earth, as the Gravity large SUV must still enter production before the end of this year. Once that gains momentum, Lucid will begin turning its attention to its Model Y rival, and that means we may only get confirmation of the Earth’s place in the Lucid lineup sometime next year.

Trademark filings do not guarantee the use of such names for future vehicles and are often used exclusively as a means of protecting intellectual property to prevent rival OEMs from capitalizing on similar naming strategies. Such a filing cannot be construed as production intent.
