Jimny vs Thar off-road

The Mahindra Thar has been the country’s most popular lifestyle off-roader for quite some time now. To challenge its dominance, Maruti Suzuki has introduced its own lifestyle off-roader, the Jimny. Even before its official launch, the Jimny received numerous orders. Now that its pricing is out, it is gaining even more popularity. As one of the most anticipated models of this year, a comparison with the Thar on off-road terrains was inevitable. Recently, several videos showcasing the two SUVs tackling uncharted terrains have been surfacing on the internet. Most recently, a video directly comparing the off-roading capabilities of the two SUVs has been shared on YouTube.

The video of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar taking on off-road adventures and challenging each other has been shared on YouTube by BRH Expeditions on their channel. In the video, the presenter and his crew members first try tackling a few obstacles with the Jimny alone. It is noticeable that the Jimny easily crawls over the trails. Following this, the presenter states that the Mahindra Thar has arrived at the location, and they will now take turns tackling the trails.

After the arrival of the Thar, the Jimny manages to cover the first few trails easily. However, after some time, it starts to rain lightly, and the trails become damp. As a result, the Jimny starts experiencing some difficulties. One incident that occurs is when the Thar crosses a trail that the Jimny had previously conquered. When the Jimny attempts the same trail again, it fails to clear it. The presenter explains that the Thar made the trail deeper, causing the Jimny to get stuck at the last point. As the rain becomes more intense, the trails become muddy, and the Jimny gets stuck at a few other trails as well.

Continuing in the video, the presenter and his crew members try tackling a few more terrains. While the Jimny manages to cross most of them, it does get stuck on a few occasions. On the other hand, the Mahindra Thar clears most of the trails, despite the rain, thanks to its heavier weight and more powerful engine. The Thar holds an advantage with its wider and taller dimensions, providing more interior space and higher ground clearance.

Although the Jimny gets stuck on some trails, it proves itself as a worthy competitor to the Mahindra Thar. One key advantage of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is its lower curb weight, resulting in a better power-to-weight ratio compared to the Thar. This lighter weight translates to a more agile and nimble driving experience, especially in demanding conditions. Despite having a smaller engine and lower power output, the Jimny’s compact dimensions and lighter weight make it highly maneuverable.

In terms of drivetrain options, the Thar offers a range of variants, including petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, diesel-manual, and diesel-automatic. On the other hand, the Jimny exclusively features a petrol engine and offers a choice between manual and automatic transmissions. Additionally, the Jimny comes standard with a four-wheel drive system, providing enhanced off-road capabilities.
