Those words suggest that changes won’t be wholesale, nor will they be imminent. It takes time to evolve styling without incurring fortunes for new tooling, and Mercedes has already walked a long way down the EQ styling path, so some existing elements will simply have to be integrated into future designs.
News of a change in styling direction is music to the ears of traditional Mercedes buyers who prefer something a little more, um, traditional. In fact, last year, Mercedes dealers in America took twice the time to sell an EQ model as the equivalent BMW, and it wasn’t much better compared to Audi, either.
The issue, said the dealers, was a lack of lust factor, so even though Mercedes also has loads of trendy and fashion-conscious fans and buyers who would likely want something that appears as the antithesis of the traditional Merc look, the EQ styling simply doesn’t resonate with the majority of buyers.
