MG Motor India currently retails two electric cars in India— Comet EV and ZS EV.
Morris Garages (MG) is known to boast a long list of electric vehicles (EVs) in their global portfolio, and the company is reportedly planning to bring some of them to India as well. Although most of the EVs are rebadged iterations of models sold in China by parent company SAIC, with an MG logo they inherit a global appeal.
The Chinese-owned British carmaker has now filed a new trademark for an all-new model. Named ‘Excellor EV’, the trademark was filed on 26 December 2023 and the journal date mentions 4 March 2024. The Excelor EV is a mystery, since the name is unique to the company’s global portfolio.
We presume that the Excelor EV could be MG’s attempt at creating a subcompact electric SUV in India. If and when launched, this potential battery-powered model could rival Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV400 Pro. MG had previously showcased an array of models from its global lineup at the 2023 Auto Expo to gauge customer interest including the eMG6 hybrid sedan, MG eHS SUV, MG eRX5 SUV and Marvel R.
MG Motor India other developments
MG Motor India has confirmed two launches for 2024. One of them is the facelifted Gloster which is expected to make its debut later this month. This will be the first major update to the flagship D-segment SUV ever since it was launched in 2021.
The company also forged a partnership with Jindal Steel Works (JSW) where the latter acquired a 35 percent stake in the Indian arm of MG Motor. This paved the way for the steel major to enter India’s automotive industry. New announcements from this joint venture are expected to be made next week.
