Unknown to Ponsin, the Diversion Team, created last summer, was tasked to cancel as many range-related service bookings as possible.

As per the report, Tesla created the division because service centers were overwhelmed with appointments from owners disappointed with the claimed range estimates and projections shown by the onboard computer, said several people close to the matter.

Reuters spoke to people familiar with the team who believe that, in most cases, many of these vehicles did not need repair – owners were just confused by the disappointing range. Several automotive experts told the publication that Tesla vehicles often fail to reach the range estimates advertised by the automaker.

Alarmingly, managers told employees of the Diversion Team that they were saving the company approximately $1,000 with every canceled appointment by taking weight off the service center’s shoulders.
