Cars and alcohol are two things that should never come in the same sentence. This is because if someone is drinking and driving, they become a liability and can cause harm to themselves as well as others. However, there is a situation where alcohol and cars can be mixed together, and recently a video showing how this is done has been shared online. In this short video, two old gentlemen can be seen adding vodka into a Toyota Fortuner, and the reason behind this might surprise you.

Men add vodka to Fortuner’s windshield wiper fluid reservoir

This video, showing vodka being poured into a Toyota Fortuner, has been shared on Instagram by Dalimss News on their page. We can note that there are two old gentlemen standing in front of a Toyota Fortuner with its bonnet open. They also had a vodka bottle in their hands as well.

Following this, they start by mentioning that drinking and driving in the mountains is something that should not be done. They then add that only the “car drinks.” After this, the man in the blue T-shirt can be seen pouring vodka from the bottle into the windshield wiper fluid reservoir.

He then explains that they are doing this so that the wipers can work in freezing cold temperatures. They also highlight that they are using Magic Moments vodka for this task.

What does adding vodka to windshield fluid do?

To many people, it may seem like these old gentlemen are wasting money and alcohol by adding it to their Fortuner. However, in reality, this is a hack that many people who drive in sub-freezing temperatures use. What happens in such conditions is that the fluid in the windshield wiper reservoir freezes as the water inside freezes at 0°C.

However, as alcohol has a very low freezing point of -114°C (pure ethanol), mixing it with the water in the windshield wiper fluid reservoir helps in avoiding the freezing of water. If a lower freezing point liquid is not added into the reservoir, there is a high chance that frozen water, which expands in size, can break the entire reservoir, causing inconvenience.

How effective is adding vodka?

Now, although adding alcohol to the reservoir is a good idea, it is not advisable to add vodka to it. This is primarily because vodka only has 40 percent ethanol in it. So, mixing it with the water in the reservoir will only dilute it more and reduce its efficacy.

There are other disadvantages to using vodka as well, and it is related to cost. Vodka is expensive when compared to automotive-grade products specifically designed for this purpose. Also, vodka does not contain any cleaning agents, which proper windshield wiper fluid has. So, regular use of this can damage the windshield.

What should be used in this situation?

If you are planning to drive your vehicle in sub-freezing temperatures, then we suggest you add commercial-grade windshield wiper fluids. If you use those windshield wipers, then instead of wasting money, you can get a fluid that will not freeze even in temperatures as low as -50°C.

Netizens’ reactions

A number of netizens had a funny reaction to this video. They also highlighted that adding vodka to the reservoir is wasteful and that they should have used isopropyl alcohol instead.
