Original Road-Legal Ford GT40 Expected To Sell For Eight Figures

Chassis P/1069 is an MK1 built to order for Ford USA. The posting mentions that it was a press car, so Ford USA likely wanted to give American automotive journalists a taste of what is arguably Carroll Shelby’s greatest creation. We all know about the epic on-track battle with Ferrari, which is the main reason why the GT40 is so revered.

Ford didn’t keep it in the USA, however. It was sent as a loaner to the Swiss racing team, Scuderia Filipinetti. The latter used to be an extremely successful racing team, competing in sports car racing, endurance racing, and even Formula 1. Naturally, it raced a GT40 in what would eventually become the FIA’s World Endurance Championship, and they wanted something striking to showcase at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show.

Scuderia Filipinetti painted the car in Metallic Borneo Green for Geneva, and after that, it was sent to the UK, where it was put to use as a press car. Mercifully, it survived the onslaught of Brits pretending to be Ken Miles.
