The Ferrari Sigma was a concept Formula 1 car introduced in 1969, designed by Pininfarina (then Pinin Farina). It was built as a direct result of the many deaths in F1. At the time, the company was run by Renzo Carli, married to Gianna Pininfarina, Battista’s daughter. Giuseppe Farina was her cousin, so the two were well-versed in the carnage during those years.
Unfortunately, F1 only really started taking safety seriously after two deaths in one weekend in 1994. The Sigma boasted many advanced safety features that could have stopped many deaths. These features include a driver survival cell, multi-layer fuel tanks, a racing harness, and a fire suppression system.
The Sigma was unveiled sporting a unique livery, which will likely be carried to the Battista. As F1 cars are famous for being open, this is also a prime opportunity to introduce a roadster.
The big question is whether Automobili Pininfarina will stick to its naming convention, in which case the roadster will be called Giuseppe. Sigma might be better, but we’re 100% behind an insane drop-top hypercar called Giuseppe.
